Back in November 2022, an official cooperation agreement was signed between the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore and Semmelweis University. The signing ceremony took place in Budapest at Semmelweis University, with Professor Chong Yap Seng, Dean of NUS Medicine, and Professor Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University, representing their respective institutions.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration in several key areas of mutual interest, particularly in research activities, as well as academic exchange opportunities for both faculty members and students. The signing event was held alongside the Semmelweis Symposium 2022.

Following this succesful cooperation, in the beginning of 2026 a newly updated Agreement for Faculty-Wide Exchange Programme for Undergraduate Medical Students has been concluded between the National University of Singapore, acting through its Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Semmelweis University. Although a cooperation and exchange programme between the two institutions had already been in place, this renewed agreement marks an important step forward, significantly broadening the scope of the partnership.

Starting from the autumn semester of 2026, two exceptional medical students from Semmelweis University, selected through a competitive application process, will have the opportunity to spend a full academic year at NUS.

The selection process — including both application and interview stages — has already been successfully completed, and two students have been chosen to take part in this prestigious one-year programme in Singapore.

This initiative contributes to the university’s broader strategic objective of building sustainable international partnerships that enhance excellence in education, research, and healthcare innovation.
