As part of the 3rd Hungarian–Cuban Rectors’ Meeting, Dr. Mairim Lago Queija, Rector of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, visited Hungary and paid an official visit to Semmelweis University. The meeting took place on 20 May 2025, with the aim of signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities.
The Cuban delegation included H.E. Mr. Walter Baluja García, Minister of Higher Education of Cuba, and H.E. Guillermo Vázquez Moreno, Ambassador of Cuba to Hungary.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University, delivered a presentation introducing the institution, highlighting its history, educational and research activities, and international relations. This was followed by a presentation by Rector Dr. Mairim Lago Queija, who introduced the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, emphasizing its educational structure, research fields, and international recognition.
Following the presentations, H.E. Mr. Walter Baluja García expressed his gratitude for the meeting and underlined the importance of future collaboration. He noted that, like the University of Havana, Semmelweis University also enjoys significant international recognition, making the cooperation a valuable opportunity for both sides. He also informed participants that the University of Havana had recently been awarded a medal of excellence, a prestigious recognition of its achievements.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Mairim Lago Queija also thanked the hosts for their warm welcome and expressed her hope that the relationship between the two institutions would continue to strengthen.
The visit took place in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation, laying the foundation for strengthening official relations between the two universities. As a first tangible outcome, the parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding which will serve as the basis for future collaboration in education, research, and student exchange programs.
