In September 2024, two groups of Iraqi doctors visited our university as part of the Semmelweis Study Tour for Iraqi Practitioners Program, which aimed to provide theoretical trainings for Iraqi practitioners attending the fee-based short courses.

On 23 October 2024, twelve Iraqi gynaecologists and pharmacists participated in the first short program to gain an insight into the professional work of Semmelweis University.

During the morning session Dr. Marcel Pop, Director of International Relations, presented the history of the university, its work, its teaching and research activities and its international relations. Dr. Pop also introduced the Clinical Centre of Semmelweis University.

After the general introductions, the Iraqi doctors were given a tour of the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research at Semmelweis University by Prof. Dr. András Matolcsy, Director of the Department, including the stately building and the rich library of the department. The work in the department’s laboratories and the state-of-the-art lecture and teaching rooms were of great interest.

In the afternoon session the Iraqi medical team attended two more professional presentations. First, Prof. Dr. István Antal, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Semmelweis University, presented the faculty, then Prof. Dr. Nándor Ács, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, presented the educational and professional activities of the department. The presentation of modern gynaecological and obstetric procedures was received with great interest by the Iraqi doctors.

On 25 October 2024, seventeen Iraqi surgeons took part in the second short program, also visiting the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research, led by Dr. Csaba Bödör. During the tour of the department, the guests had the opportunity to visit several laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technology, where Deputy Director presented the institute’s cancer research activities.

In the afternoon, the surgeons were introduced to the professional and educational activities of the university and its international relations through professional presentations.

Following Dr. Marcel Pop’s presentation on the university, Dr. Ákos Szücs, Deputy Director of the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology, presented the activities of the department, including the latest robotic surgical techniques used in surgical procedures.

The professional activities of the Department of Orthopaedics at Semmelweis University were presented to the Iraqi surgeons’ team by Dr. Tamás Terebessy, Deputy Director.

Both professional days ended with a certificate ceremony and a photo session. Based on the enthusiastic and positive feedback and the strong professional interest of both teams, we are confident that the two professional days were the beginning of a long and successful cooperation.
