The importance of prevention in maintaining health cannot be emphasized enough, which is why the Family-Friendly University Program includes a number of screening tests. University employees can apply for the screening tests listed below throughout the year.

audiology

Audiology

Hearing loss usually develops slowly and gradually, so it can become a common condition without being noticed, which makes it very difficult to recognize. It is extremely important that if you notice symptoms of hearing loss, you immediately consult a hearing specialist who, after conducting the necessary examinations, will find the right solution to your hearing problem. It can be a warning sign if you have problems understanding speech, often have to ask questions in noise, feel dizzy, have tinnitus or have balance problems. The examinations are performed by an audiologist specialist, who first asks the patient about the nature of the complaint, previous complaints, and possibly diseases in the family, and takes a medical history. Based on this, he determines the necessary examination and its course.

melanoma

Melanoma screening

Melanoma is the only malignant tumor that has a good chance of being detected early, as it most often develops on the skin and is thus noticeable. It most often develops from pigment cells in the skin: such cells are also found in healthy skin and in moles.

In its initial stage, the tumor is only present in the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis. At this point, even a simple excision can completely cure the patient. When melanoma spreads deep into the skin, where there are already lymphatic and blood vessels, the chance of metastases increases, as the cells can travel through the blood vessels to distant organs (liver, lungs, brain, bones, etc.) and settle there, starting to grow, destroying the function of the given organ(s). Therefore, it is crucial to detect it as early as possible. The most effective method for this is screening tests. A layperson is unlikely to be able to detect the warning signs, or they do so too late, while melanomas discovered during screenings are most often detected at an early stage.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone density and damage to the structure of bone tissue, which leads to increased bone fragility. It is actually a silent disease, as it is initially painless and its presence is often only discovered after accidents with fractures.

Hereditary factors play a significant role in the development of osteoporosis (70-80%).

In addition, the following risk factors may contribute:

    • Lack of physical activity,
    • smoking,
    • excessive alcohol consumption,
    • a diet low in calcium and vitamins, and
    • low vitamin D intake.
    • Various diseases and medications can also play a role in the development of the disease, including:
      •  steroids,
      • hormonal problems,
      • intestinal diseases and malabsorption,
      • immune system-suppressing drugs,
      • morbid thinness,
      • anorexia,
      • chronic kidney and liver failure,
      • hyperthyroidism,
      • long-term use of asthma and epilepsy medications.

Bone density testing is particularly recommended for women during menopause, over the age of 45-50. For men, screening is recommended around the age of 50-60. However, if there are known risk factors – such as a family history, hyperthyroidism, Crohn’s disease, liver or kidney disease, type 1 diabetes, malabsorption disorders (milk, sugar or gluten sensitivity), early menopause, a bone fracture due to minor trauma or taking steroid-containing medications – the test is justified regardless of age. In addition, the test may also be recommended in the event of bone pain or increasing back pain, based on a specialist’s recommendation.

Bone density testing can only be performed in exceptional cases for people under 40 and over 90. In addition, due to the technical limitations of the test, it cannot be used for people weighing more than 120 kg or taller than 198 cm.

Contraindications for bone density testing include:

  • Presence of a pacemaker
  • Pregnancy
  • In case of breastfeeding, it is not recommended to breastfeed for 48 hours after the examination
  • Bilateral hip replacement
  • Implanted implants
  • Metal or fixation plate in the spine
  • The examination cannot be performed for 6 days after a CT scan with contrast agent
  • The examination is also not recommended for 6 days after iodine given during an endocrinological examination.

Bone density measurement is performed using a DEXA device, which is an X-ray-based imaging technology that accurately determines the mineral content of bones. DEXA measures bone density in the lower spine and femur using a low dose of X-rays while the patient is lying down. The procedure is simple, quick, and completely painless.

It is not recommended to eat foods high in calcium before the test, and metal-containing accessories must be removed. During the measurement, jewelry and metal objects (such as clasps, buttons, zippers, piercings, rivets, sequins, bra clasps) must not remain on the body! No restrictions are necessary afterwards.

  • If the test result shows no osteoporosis, the next test can be performed after 3 years;
  • If the test shows incipient osteoporosis (reduced bone density: osteopenia), the next test can be performed after 2 years;
  • If the patient suffers from osteoporosis, he/she should be recalled for a control test after 1 year.

Regular exercise, a diet rich in calcium, and supplementation with vitamins D and K play a fundamental role in preventing the condition. For patients suffering from osteoporosis, rheumatologists may recommend medication that can help rebuild bones.

oral cancer

Laryngeal, tongue and oral cavity cancer screening

Hungary ranks first in Europe and third in the world in terms of the frequency of oral cancer per capita: about 1,500 people die from the disease in our country every year. Regular alcohol consumption and smoking are proven risk factors, but nowadays we also encounter an increasing number of cancers caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). Although their prognosis is better, unfortunately they are often detected at an advanced stage. Regular oral cancer screening and participation in HPV screening tests are of utmost importance in prevention, but self-examination is also essential. The simple, outpatient, painless endoscopic examination takes a few minutes, and even minor suspicious mucosal changes can be detected with its help.

dentistry

Dental screening

Dental check-ups are the cornerstone of healthy teeth. Regular dental check-ups are essential even if you have no complaints, as this is the only way to detect early problems, such as tooth decay or gingivitis. It is worth going for a dental check-up every six months, so that minor problems can be treated easily, quickly and painlessly.

Oral cancer screening is also part of the health assessment, and university doctors make treatment recommendations for all participants. Thanks to the Family-Friendly University Program, the necessary interventions are also performed by university specialists.

mammography

Mammography

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. However, the sooner the disease is detected, the more effective the treatment. That is why it is especially important for women to participate in regular breast screening. Self-examination, mammography (traditional mammography, breast tomosynthesis) and breast ultrasound play an important role in prevention. Ultrasound examinations of the breasts and lymph nodes are performed between the ages of thirty and thirty-five.

Mammography is performed in a standing position, using special X-ray equipment, and is currently the most reliable and modern diagnostic procedure. During tomosynthesis, the X-ray source moves along the curve above the breast, while several images are taken. The images are reviewed by a radiologist, followed by a physical examination and an ultrasound examination of the breasts and surrounding lymph nodes. If any abnormalities are found during the mammography examination, additional examinations are necessary. In case of sensitive breasts, it is advisable to schedule the mammography examination for the first two weeks after the first day of menstruation. Before the examination, it is advisable to remove any creams, antiperspirants, and cosmetics from the skin.

gynecology

Gynecology

It is reccomended for every woman to undergo a gynecological screening at the beginning of her sexual life, and annually in the absence of complaints and symptoms, which is the key to early detection of possible malignant processes. During the complex screening, all organs that are classified as female genital organs and in which tumors can develop are examined, thus including the examination of the cervix, uterus, ovaries and breasts.

The basis of the examination is cytological sampling from the cervix. An important part of the full-cycle screening is also the vaginal ultrasound examination, during which polyps and fibroids can be well detected, and ovarian changes can also be detected in time. A palpation examination performed with both hands shows the condition of the uterus and its surroundings, its possible sensitivity, and inflammatory changes. Finally, the breasts may also be palpated for the purpose of a full-cycle screening.

It is advisable to schedule cancer screening in the middle of the menstrual cycle (days 10-22 after menstruation), because in the few days before and after menstruation, cells may appear in the sample that interfere with the test results.

prostate

Prostate cancer screening

In our country, prostate cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in men. A risk factor is that it can take years for the tumor to develop before it causes complaints and symptoms (e.g. difficulty urinating, nighttime urination, bloody urine). Prostate cancer detected early is 90% curable, while later only the complaints can be alleviated. The most commonly affected age group is between 50-70 years old, but we are increasingly seeing young men, even 40-45 years old. Therefore, in order to detect prostate cancer early and in time, it is recommended that all men over 45 years old be screened in the following two ways:

  1. PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test, which involves a simple blood test
  2. Digital rectal examination, which is a simple, short and painless examination of the prostate through the rectum

ophthalmology

Ophthalmology

Vision loss usually develops gradually, so it can become a common condition without you noticing it, which makes it very difficult to recognize, but it also makes our everyday activities difficult without noticing it. We receive almost 90% of the information from our environment through our eyes, so it is extremely important to have an annual eye examination, even if we have no complaints. An eye examination can not only reveal the extent of vision loss, but also identify symptoms of many other diseases from the condition of the eyes (e.g. circulatory disorders, diabetes).

During a general eye examination, the specialist assesses the health of the eye, tests visual acuity, and diagnoses any vision problems.

colon cancer

Colon cancer screening

Colon cancer screening is recommended for everyone over the age of 50, but if suspected, it can be important to detect the disease as soon as possible at any age. A fecal occult blood test is the fastest, simplest and most painless procedure, so it is recommended to have it done. If the test detects blood in the stool, it definitely indicates that it is worth having the condition of our intestinal system examined more thoroughly for the purpose of early detection and effective treatment.
