National Theater

The National Theater connects different age groups, city-folk and country-folk, and Hungarians with the world.

We have tried to reach young people with real theatrical experiences, we have hosted valuable performances from theatres in the countryside and beyond the borders, and we have taken our productions to theatres all over the country and beyond the borders.

The National Theatre’s priorities are also reflected in its repertoire. Mainly – but not exclusively – for young people, the most important Hungarian classics are constantly performed, such as Bánk bán, Csongor és Tünde, as well as Az ember tragédiája. In a large-scale joint performance with the Hungarian National Dance Company, young people can also get to know Géza Gárdonyi’s Egri Csillagok. They also present a number of other, excellent Hungarian authors. Classics from across the globe are also performed ranging from Euripides, Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov to Bulgakov. Contemporary works like those of Ivan Viripayev have been performed at the National Theater too.
