The Sculpture Park Museum houses sculptures commissioned between 1945 and 1990 by the government for use in public spaces. Although these works disappeared from public spaces during the political upheaval of 1989-90, their fate is as interesting as their history. Based on the designs of Podmaniczky Prize-winning architect Ákos Eleőd Ybl, the thematic sculpture park “A Sentence about Tyranny…” was built, which can be interpreted as a critique of all political dictatorships.

Older people may have seen the statues of Ostapenko, Marx and Engels or Béla Kun in their original places or marched in front of monuments to Lenin or the Soviet Republic. Younger people will be captivated by the historical background, the harsh realities of dictatorship and the impressive display of a distant, unknown era in the park and its complementary facilities, in the Barracks Cinema and the Bunker Cinema.

The Memento Park is a special and unique museum also because it has operated independently without budgetary support since it opened in 1994, and since 2007 it has been run by the Monumentum Public Benefit Foundation.
