CALL FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Pannonia Scholarship Program to ensure short- and long-term PhD student mobility

 

For the 2024/2025 academic year, the short- and long-term mobility opportunities of the Pannonia Scholarship Program have become available to PhD students of the University. Within the framework of the program, you can study, research or actively participate in conferences abroad, either within Europe or in more remote parts of the world!

The Pannonia Scholarship Program provides scholarship support for the duration of the study trip abroad – as defined in this call for scholarship application – up to the available financial resources, which contributes to covering the costs incurred by students (travel, accommodation, board, insurance). Support for participant mobility consists of grants to participants which do not necessarily cover all expenses incurred by outgoing travellers. The scholarship holder does not have to account itemized for the scholarship paid to him/her.

Students are eligible if:

• have active PhD student status at the Doctoral School of Semmelweis University at the time of submitting the application,
• have two completed semesters at the time of application,
• Hungarian nationals or individuals who live in the territory of Hungary as refugees, asylum-seekers, admitted, immigrants, settlers or have the right to move and reside freely on the basis of law,
• have at least intermediate knowledge of English or the language of the destination country,
• They have outstanding academic, scientific and public activities.
• Students receiving scholarships from Stipendium Hungaricum are only eligible for a short-term student mobility.

General eligibility criteria:

• They have an active student status at the time of mobility (except in the case of a recent PhD graduate traineeship).
• The same student may participate in a total mobility period of up to 12 months per study cycle, regardless of the number and type of mobility activities.
• The period of physical mobility can be interrupted. The duration of the interruption does not count towards the duration of the mobility activity.
• All learning periods abroad, with the exception of recent PhD graduate traineeships, should form part of the student’s program of study for obtaining a diploma in any cycle of study. In other words, activities carried out abroad must be counted and corresponded to studies at home.
• For other conditions related to the different types of scholarships, please read at each type of scholarship.

In the case of student mobility for research purposes in a higher education institution, a preliminary Framework Agreement between the sending higher education institution and the receiving institution is required.

Types of scholarships:

• Long-term student mobility:
  • mobility for research purposes (min. 2 months, max. 3 months)
    • Condition:
      • A statement of support signed by the student’s PhD supervisor is required to apply for a research fellowship.
      • The Learning Agreement linked to the research grant shall set out the activities planned and the results to be achieved during the mobility.
      • The assessment criteria include:
        • the excellence of the applicant’s previous research activity, supported preferably by accepted/published scientific articles, abstracts of international and domestic conferences, and rankings achieved at TDK/OTDK conferences,
        • professional content and feasibility of the work plan,
      • the excellence of the foreign research organisation supported by its position in international rankings.
        • After the scholarship period, within max. 1 month, the student has to prepare a 1-2-page research report containing the activities and results of the mobility period. The report is accepted by the student’s PhD supervisor and the head of the competent Doctoral Division.

• post-PhD graduation traineeship, so-called recent PhD graduate internship (min. 2 months, max. 12 months)
  • Condition:
    • In the case of internships for PhD students, applications and selection of students must take place during the active PhD student status, within the year of PhD graduation, and mobility must be completed within one year of PhD graduation, taking into account the closing date of the implementation of the current project.
    • The assessment criteria include:
      • the excellence of the applicant’s previous research activity, supported preferably by accepted/published scientific articles, abstracts of international and domestic conferences, and rankings achieved at TDK/OTDK conferences.
    • After the scholarship period, within max. 1 month, the student has to prepare a 1-2-page report on the internship, which contains the activities and results of the mobility period.

• short-term student mobility (min. 2 days, max. 30 days)
  • mobility for research purposes
    • Condition:
      • A statement of support signed by the student’s PhD supervisor is required to apply for a research fellowship.
      • The Learning Agreement shall set out the activities planned and the results to be achieved during the mobility.
      • The award criteria include:
        • the excellence of the applicant’s previous research activity, supported preferably by accepted/published publications, abstracts of international and domestic conferences, and rankings achieved at TDK/OTDK conferences,
        • professional content and feasibility of the work plan,
      • the excellence of the foreign research organisation supported by its position in international rankings.
        • After the scholarship period, within max. 1 month, the student has to prepare a 1-2-page research report containing the activities and results of the mobility period. The report is accepted by the student’s PhD supervisor and the head of the competent Doctoral Division.

• participation in conferences
  • Condition:
    • Participation means an active contribution to the professional content or implementation of the conference, i.e. the student on mobility gives a presentation or poster presentation within the framework of the given conference. The application must be accompanied by an abstract of the presentation or poster. Payment of the grant is subject to acceptance of the presentation/poster.
    • The assessment criteria include:
      • the excellence of the applicant’s previous research activity, supported preferably by accepted/published scientific articles, abstracts of international and domestic conferences, and rankings achieved at TDK/OTDK conferences.
    • After participating in the conference, within max. 1 month, the student has to prepare a 1-2-page travel report.

• Summer School
  • Condition:
    • The application must be accompanied by a professional justification indicating how participation in the summer school contributes to the career development of the PhD student.
    • The award criteria include:
      • the excellence of the applicant’s previous research activity, supported preferably by accepted/published scientific articles, abstracts of international and domestic conferences, and rankings achieved at TDK/OTDK conferences.
    • After attending the summer school, within 1-month max., the student must prepare a 1-2-page travel report.

Scholarship rate:

It depends on the type of scholarship, its duration and the host country.

Deadline for submitting applications: continuous (until exhaustion of resources)

Application procedure:

1. The application must be sent electronically, together with the attachments specified in the Application Form, to the phd.palyazatok@semmelweis.hu email address. Among the specified annexes, a student status certificate and, in the case of mobility for research purposes, a statement of support signed by the PhD supervisor are absolutely required.
2. Applications must be submitted no later than 2 months before the start of mobility.
3. The formal verification of the application is carried out by the Doctoral Office. The application is reviewed by the Doctoral Application Committee (DPB).
4. The decision of the DPB (proposed/not proposed for funding) will be notified to the applicant and the International Mobility Office by the Doctoral Office.
5. The International Mobility Office will contact the student supported by the DPB and examine the student status certificate submitted by the student and, in the case of mobility for research purposes, the statement of support signed by the PhD supervisor, and inform the student about the amount of support and further administrative steps.
   1. In the case of a recent PhD graduate (post-PhD graduation) internship, the university can provide scholarship support for up to 3 months with this application. In the case of longer mobility, the International Mobility Office must be contacted in writing following the DPB’s decision (pannonia@semmelweis.hu) and may be supported for a longer period by considering available funds and on a case-by-case/individual basis.
