Action plan based on the student feedback received in the  1st semester of the 2020/2021 academic year

Department: Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology

Faculty: Faculty of Dentistry

Course: Szájsebészet II (FOKOSZB310_2A), Szájsebészet IV (FOKOSZB310_4A)

Curriculum change:

The oral surgery curriculum has been changed in the first half of the 2020/21 academic year. Earlier there had been a written colloquium at the end of the second semester of the fourth year. From the 2020/21 academic year, this colloquium will be at the end of the first semester and it will be an oral exam. The reason for the change is that the material from the first semester of the 4th year plays a very important role in the everyday practice and in our opinion the oral exam offers more opportunities to assess the suitability and the empathic skills of the students. We can also give you more precise feedback about the segments that should be further improved in the remaining 2 years of studying.

Our feedback on general comments by the students:

We have paid special attention to the practical education so far during the courses of the curriculum of Oral Surgery and Dentistry taught to fourth-year general medical students, as well as to the inpatient practices during the courses of Oral Surgery IV and V for fifth-year dental students. We also have striven to provide the highest possible level of theoretical knowledge.

Furthermore, we would like to develop the educational activities of the inpatient department in the next academic year according to these principles:

  • Further improve the quality of practical training:

In the case of dental students, the student groups are divided into smaller groups of 2-3 people during the inpatient examinations in the inpatient department and the outpatient traumatology as well as during the practical parts in the operating theater.

During the internship of general medicine students (3.5 hours), the students will have the opportunity to examine patients in the outpatient department for traumatology as well as in the inpatient department and also in the operating theater.

For students from both faculties, we aim to:

  • increase the number of patient examinations if possible
  • increase the number of surgical assistations
  • increase the personal participation in operations in the operating room
  • increase the participation in inpatient care is (e.g. dressing change, insertion and removal of a feeding tube, venipuncture, removal of sutures, etc.)
  • improve the quality of theoretical training:
  • we plan to give more material to analyze using the available imaging methods in connection with the patient examination during the practices.
  • in relation with the patient examination, the theoretical background of the respective disease, the main directions of diagnosis and treatment will be reviewed with the help of the previously prepared presentations.
  • further expansion of the existing, available electronic learning materials for interested students: creation of operation videos to illustrate the operation steps, electronic tests from photos of certain diseases in order to better master the learning material and optionally to measure the knowledge acquired
  • involving students in planning operations (e.g.: using a computer-planning for dysgnathia operations)

Our feedback on specific comments on mandatory subjects:

Students say:
„I think for oral surgery practice there is too many student for the patient so every student may get chance to extract every 3 weeks which is not enough”

„The practical lessons are not so great if you are not extracting, just standing around and waiting..”

„we were too many people in one class and I literally extracted only once during 14 weeks! maybe add more groups with less students per group.”

„I wish we could practice more extractions.”

Our response: We try to involve more chairs for practices. We also plan to divide the groups into subgroups so that students who are not extracting can also be occupied and a teacher will carry them. We can provide clinical cases for students depending on the capacity of the administration board and the imaging system (x-ray). Sometimes this task is not easy, but we try to manage it.

Students say:
„I wish there was recordings that was uploaded on the zoom website.”

Our response: We plan to give more zoom recordings of the lectures according to the capacity of the storage system. We put higher emphasis on synchronizing the online materials of the curriculum on different platforms.

Other objectives

We plan to develop a suitable, well-functioning video and photo system in order to improve the quality of education (undergraduate, postgraduate) and scientific works. It would be advisable to incorporate it into the daily routine so that the documentation could be more complete and more scientific work could be prepared from our practice. We are constantly trying to maintain the closest possible relationship with our older colleagues, who are already retired, so that the “old school” is not lost among the many novelties for young people.
