Information for Applicants for the MD-PhD Excellence Program

No printed/posted documents are to be sent to the Doctoral Office.

Admission decision will be taken by a scientific board based on the applicant general and topic-related knowledge and previous scientific activity.

The admission decision will be released by the end of July.

Admitted MD-PhD students are supposed to start the last or the last two years of their graduate studies in the 2024/2025 academic year.

The tuition fee for Semmelweis University students is 4000 EUR / semester, non- Semmelweis University students is 8000 EUR/semester (Based on recommendation of the academic supervisors the tuition fee can be reduced).

Tuition fee for Translational Medicine Program is 10000 EUR for an academic year or 6000 EUR / semester.

The tuition fee is supposed to be paid by 30 September 2024.

Students should contact the Financial management Unit (titkarsag.digh@semmelweis.hu) of the Doctoral School to arrange the invoice.

Participants of the MD-PhD Excellence Program are obliged to take a complex, comprehensive exam by the end of the 4th active semester. The students can only enter the second part of the study program upon the successful completion of the complex exam.

The exam has two parts:

  • The practical part (students have to present their scientific achievements).
  • The theoretical part (1 main subject, one additional subject)
  • Recommendation for the subjects of the complex exam and for the members of the professional board of the theoretical exam is given by the Doctoral Divisions.

The spring semester complex exam period is in June, August or September. The autumn semester exam period is in February and March.

The Doctoral Divisions and Translational Medicine Center send information about the main and additional subjects and about the date and venue of the exam.

Students of the MD-PhD Excellence Program have to publish at least two scientific papers of which the cumulated impact factor (IF) should be equal or exceed 150% of IF requirements of trained PhD students in the given discipline. For further information please refer to “The fulfilment of PhD degree acquisition requirements of trained PhD students”: 

The 2/3 of IF requirements (100%) has to be fulfilled with at least two original papers related to the dissertation topic. The Student must have at least one “first-author” paper published in a Journal whose IF exceeds 50% of requirements. Another 1/3 of IF requirements (50%) should be fulfilled with scientific publications which might not relate to the topic of the dissertation, and the order of authors is arbitrary.

Students have to earn 16 credits in the first four semesters prior to the complex exam.

After the complex exam, there are no further educational requirements.

The dissertation must be presented within three years after passing the complex exam.
