Something to Hold On To in Times of Uncertainty
A child’s serious illness can be an emotional earthquake that shakes the entire family to its core. At the Palliative and Comfort Care Unit, we believe that supporting emotional well-being is just as important as managing physical symptoms. A sense of inner calm and emotional security can directly improve a child’s well-being and support more effective pain management.
Emotional support is not an optional addition to our care – it is a cornerstone of care. Our support professionals are not only experts in their fields, but also companions who remain by your side from the initial shock of the diagnosis, through the challenges of everyday life, and through the moment of saying goodbye.
Whom Do We Support, and How?
Support for the Child
We help children cope with anxiety related to their illness and fears caused by the hospital environment. Using age-appropriate language, stories, play, and other child-friendly approaches, we support them in holding on to their sense of childhood throughout their illness.
Support for Parents
We provide a non-judgemental space where parents can express difficult emotions, including fear, uncertainty, and guilt. We support you as you face life-changing decisions and help your family draw on its inner strengths and resources.
Questions of Life and Spirituality
We help families find something to hold on to when facing questions that may seem impossible to answer, such as “Why us?” We support each family in living according to their own values and beliefs, whether these are rooted in a religious tradition or a personal belief system.
How Can You Access Support?
Our team members regularly and proactively come to you during inpatient rounds and outpatient visits. You may also request support at any time by speaking with your child’s doctor or nursing team.
