Dr. Loucas Christodoulou, a Semmelweis University alumnus delivered a highly engaging lecture titled “Work in the UK” to an audience of over 120 international students. The event generated great interest, with the Q&A session lasting more than an hour after the presentation.
Dr. Christodoulou is currently working as a Consultant in Paediatric Neurology at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust, in London, UK and serves as a clinical teacher and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London. He graduated in 2003 from the English-language General Medicine program at Semmelweis University.
In the first part of his lecture, Dr. Loucas Christodoulou shared his personal journey—from his education at the English School of Nicosia, through his 26-month compulsory military service, to his admission to Semmelweis University. He reflected on his university years as a time rich with experiences and growth, both professionally and personally.
He highlighted his active involvement in student life, including his role as President of the English Program Students’ Union (EPSUS) and participation in numerous extracurricular activities within the university. He also emphasized how important it was for him to engage deeply with the Hungarian language and culture, supported by his close friendships with Hungarian classmates and a strong relationship with his landlords and other friends.
In the second half of the lecture, Dr. Christodoulou focused on career opportunities within the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). He provided practical insights into joining the system, discussing clinical attachment and shadowing programs available to medical students and recent graduates, which can serve as valuable experiences but also insights and entry points into the UK healthcare environment.
