Distinguished Hungarian and international professors participated as committee members in the Complex Exam held by the Centre for Translational Medicine this June, and several of them gave lectures to the students as part of the program. The event also included a Ph.D. defense, which was also of high quality.
The Centre for Translational Medicine 2024 Complex Exam was held between June 17 and 21, with more than sixty Ph.D. students presenting the results of their research. The written examination of the Complex Exam was on Monday for all groups, and the oral exams took place from Tuesday to Friday. Sixteen Ph.D. students from the Gastroenterology Group participated in the Complex Exam, thirteen from the Gynecology & Urology Group, eleven from the Dentistry Group, ten from the Pediatrics Group, eight from the Miscellaneous Group, and six from the Immunology & Covid Group. In the opening speech of the Complex Exam, it was announced that many of the students had outstanding research results and had published their findings in D1 journals as a first author in the past two years.
The members of the Complex Exam Committee were highly esteemed professors, and statisticians also participated in the evaluation. Renowned international professors from Germany, Austria, Romania, Finland and Slovakia were also represented in the Committees. Guests were, amongst others, Karl J. Oldhafer, Professor of General and Visceral Surgery, Representative of the Rector and the Dean at Asklepios Medical School Semmelweis University Budapest, and Christos C. Zouboulis, Director of the Departments of Dermatology, Venereology, Allergology and Immunology, Dessau Medical Center. Also a committee member was Shahrokh Shariat, head of the University Clinic for Urology at the Vienna General Hospital. Since the CTM has strong cooperation with Academia Europaea (AE) members, some of them also joined the Committees. One of them was Maria Dorobantu, Professor of Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. Another AE member was Eero Kajantie, a specialist physician in pediatrics, clinical genetics, and public health, and Professor of Lifecourse Medicine at the University of Oulu, Finland. Several of the renowned international professors also gave lectures as part of the complex exam program.
As a side event of this year’s Complex Exam, the Ph.D. defence of Eszter Ágnes Szalai was held. In addition to national experts, the opponent of the defence was Marcel Riznič, international expert of the Department of Stomatology and Maxilofacial Surgery, University of Košice. Dr. Riznič was also a member of one of the Committees at the Complex Exam. In her Ph.D. research, Dr. Szalai was investigating the diagnosis options and chlorine dioxide mouthwash therapy for intraoral halitosis. The candidate defended her Ph.D. thesis with a summa cum laude degree. She has previously published two Q1 articles on her topic.
