OVERVIEW

The Department of Prosthodontics of Semmelweis University has been a leader in the treatment of patients with temporomandibular joint disorders in Hungary for 20 years. The popular textbook Gnatology, currently in its second edition, was written by the staff of the Clinic. In addition to undergraduate training, members of the team have been running successful theoretical and practical training courses on the topic for 15 years.

Whether it’s prosthodontics or orthodontics, many of our interventions can affect the functioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Every dentist has to comply with the “Nil nocere” principle. We aim to help you master it.

Main topics of the course:
  • Use of Facebow, adjustable articulator programming
  • Determining Centric relation
  • Digital movement analysis
  • Examination of the temporomandibular joint
  • Treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction
  • Preparation of oral appliances

The course is composed of 65 % theoretical part and 35 % practical part.

The course is open to Dental Professionals (Doctors of Medicine in Dentistry).

Applicants are required to pay a registration fee before the course.

Learning objectives
  • In the theoretical part of the course, we review the functional anatomy and normal functioning of the TMJ.
  • The attendees learn about the modern tools that can help us to create customized prostheses.
  • The participants dive into the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of temporomandibular dysfunction and discuss the basic steps of treatment
  • Finally, the participants formulate and implement a treatment plan for simple and moderate TMD patients.

Introduction of the lecturers

Máté Jász, MD, DMD, PHD
Dr. Máté Jász graduated from Semmelweis University with a degree in General Medicine in 1999 and a degree in Dentistry in 2005. Since then Dr. Jász has been working as a lecturer at the university, giving lectures and practical courses in Hungarian, English and German. In 2006 he was one of the founding members of the Gnatology Working Group of the Department of Prosthodontics. Since then, that field has been an important part of his teaching, patient care and research. The abnormal functioning of the temporomandibular joint and associated diseases can have very serious consequences for general health and well-being. To help as many patients as possible live full and comfortable lives. Dr. Jász feels it is his duty to train as many colleagues as possible in this field.

 

Péter Schmidt DMD
Dr. Péter Schmidt graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry of Semmelweis University in 2000. He spent his residency years in the educational department of the university and since then he has been involved in the graduate education of university students and regularly performs as a lecturer at postgraduate courses. As a university lecturer, Dr. Schmidt also teaches gnathology, prosthodontics, odontotechnology and dental materials. Currently, he is the deputy director of the Department of Prosthodontics. Dr. Schmidt is also vice-president of the dental section of the Hungarian Medical Chamber and the president of the Hungarian Gnathological Society. One of his main commitments is to raise the level of education of colleagues interested in TMJ diseases.
