The focus includes the development of new surgical procedures including laparoscopic techniques including NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery).

The Department also deals with liver and pancreas pathophysiology, portal hypertension, liver cirrhosis, ascites and regeneration. Faculty members work on the problems of surgical oncology, minimal invasive intervention on the biliary tract, septic and hypovolemic shock and their consequences. Extensive experimental work is done on the prevention of ischemic lesions of liver and intestine. Intensive therapy and anaesthesiology-related clinical and experimental research also constitute important research projects.
