The Semmelweis Mentoring Program, established in 2019 for Hungarian medical students, was designed to ease the transition into university life. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by international students, the Institute of Behavioural Sciences extended the program in 2023/24 to include the English and German language medical programs. The pilot year exceeded expectations, and the program continues to grow in the 2024/25 academic year.
The Semmelweis International Mentoring Program aims to support first-year medical students in navigating the complexities of university life, both academically and personally. The mentors, all third-year or higher medical students, offer invaluable guidance to help mentees overcome the unique challenges of studying medicine abroad, fostering both academic success and personal development.
The interest exceeded expectations in the first year: 64 Mentors (47 students from the English and 18 from the German language program) and 177 Mentees applied (125 from the English language and 52 from the German language program).
In the year of 2024/25, 185 mentees from 52 countries have been paired with 113 mentors. The English program includes 136 mentees and 86 mentors, while the German program has 49 mentees and 27 mentors.
