The Department of Endocrinology at the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology was established on 15. May 2020 by the decision of the Senate of Semmelweis University. The primary task of the Department is the organization of gradual endocrinological education and research in endocrinology. The Head in charge of the Department is Prof. Peter Igaz, who was the director of the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine between 2016 and 2020. The Department organizes the endocrinological education of Hungarian, English and German Faculties of the University, and also different elective courses. The endocrinological investigations focus on adrenal and neuroendocrine tumors. Research on neuroendocrine tumors is also linked to the Center of Excellence on neuroendocrine tumors awarded by the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) to the Endocrine Unit of the former 2nd Department of Internal Medicine that is now part of the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology. Most recently, the Centre of Excellence title of the European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors (ENS@T) has also been awarded to the Department based on the research activites on adrenal tumors by the Research Group of Dr. Peter Igaz.
