About us

The Semmelweis University of Medicine Foundation was established by Dr. János Szentágothai and Dr. Ottó Ribári on January 14, 1992. According to its founding charter, the Foundation was established to support Semmelweis University of Medicine’s educational, health care, and research activities. The Foundation undertakes public benefit activities and performs public functions in the areas of health maintenance, disease prevention, healing and health rehabilitation, scientific activities, research, teaching and education, skill development, and the dissemination of knowledge.

The Foundation’s Founding Charter states:

• that in the course of achieving its goals, it undertakes public benefit activities and performs public functions in the areas of health maintenance, disease prevention, healing and health rehabilitation, scientific activities, research, teaching and education, skill development, and the dissemination of knowledge in order to meet the collective interest of society and the individual, because
• it provides support for carrying out state responsibilities in accordance with the provisions of the acts on health care and national higher education,
• its public benefit services are available to everyone,
• it undertakes business activities strictly in the interest of achieving its public benefit goals, and only if these do no endanger said goals,
• it does not engage in investment activities,
• it cannot divide the financial results achieved in the course of management, but shall use it to finance the goals defined in the founding charter,
• it shall not be involved in direct political activities and is independent of political parties; it shall not provide financial support to political parties, nor shall it accept support from them,
• it shall not take part in political activities, and furthermore shall neither nominate nor support candidates in the parliamentary, county, and municipal elections.
