AICER – A Hub for Surgical Innovation

AICER – Anatomy & Innovation Center for Education and Research (NOIKK*) is designed to be one of Central Eastern Europe’s most advanced translational medical facilities. The center hosts cutting-edge surgical education, biomechanical research, and medical technology validation and unites medicine, engineering, and data science. As Semmelweis University’s new multidisciplinary research center in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, AICER will be inaugurated in early 2026 and is expected to operate at full capacity across all areas by the end of the year.

*AICER – Anatomy & Innovation Center for Education and Research is Nemzeti Orvosi Innovációs Képző Központ (National Center for Medical Education and Innovation) – NOIKK in Hungarian

AICER integrates cadaver-based education, digital technology, and medical innovation into one ecosystem – where new surgical methods, devices, and procedures can be developed, tested, and taught under real, high-fidelity anatomical conditions. The center provides an unprecedented platform for collaboration between medical, engineering, and scientific disciplines, making it one of Central Europe’s most advanced translational institutions. Within this framework, orthopedics serves as one of the leading applied areas – connecting biomechanics, motion analysis, and surgical innovation with translational education and research. Other fields such as cardio-thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, trauma, and endoscopy complement this ecosystem, creating a balanced environment for both educational and technological advancement.

Built for High-Fidelity Training

Spanning over 8,150 m²

  • 3 cadaver operating rooms (6 stations each), equipped for simultaneous training and research.

  • Operating theaters for hybrid, minimally invasive, and open surgery, as well as endoscopic and ultrasound-guided interventions. Potential space for robotic interventions.

  • CT, imaging, and biomechanical labs integrated with engineering facilities.

  • Lecture halls and seminar rooms for theoretical and practical instruction.

Research Rooted in Semmelweis University’s Surgical Education

AICER is Semmelweis University’s new research center. It represents a unique convergence of education, research, and technology.

  • AICER’s research builds directly on Semmelweis University’s long-standing hands-on cadaver-based courses and surgical training programs and experimental development.

  • It aims to bring together anatomy, engineering, and clinical science in one collaborative space, turning proven educational practice into cutting-edge innovation.

  • The center creates a direct pipeline
from laboratory innovation to patient care.
