László József Barkai earned his PhD in 2020 at Semmelweis University, followed by board certifications in Internal Medicine (2021), Gastroenterology (2023), as well as a Diabetology licence (2024), all with distinction.
During his postgraduate training, he spent two years in the United Kingdom, including a fellowship in hepatology and liver transplantation at the Royal Free Hospital in London. In 2025, he participated in the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Fellowship Programme at University College London, United Kingdom.
He currently works as a gastroenterologist and internist at the Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology, Semmelweis University, holding the position of Senior Lecturer. He is currently enrolled in the Clinical Science Scholars Programme, a joint initiative between Harvard Medical School and Semmelweis University, focusing on scientific and academic skill development.
Dr. Barkai’s main professional interests include gastrointestinal endoscopy, and the advancement of endoscopic education. He plays an active role in the development and delivery of next-generation endoscopy training programs, including innovative cadaver-based courses. He has presented his work at leading international congresses such as ESGE Days, UEG Week, and ECCO.
