Barnabás Neogrády-Kiss’ ensemble of photographs and installation is interlinked by the theme of coping with illness. He was diagnosed with brain tumour in his youth and after each of his two brain surgeries he had to relearn how to use his own body, or more precisely, his right side. Since his recovery, his whole life has been accompanied by a fear of the recurrence of the disease. His disease-consciousness has indirectly but constantly been present in his creative work. As his vision is permanently impaired, his pictures are persistently concerned with the exploration of vision and perception. Involving dialogue about the disease, the preparatory phase of the C80 project helped him see his own illness not only subjectively, but also, taking a step closer to the cancer itself, as objectively as possible. Thus, cancer-related stigmatisation, which is difficult to tackle and has a distorting impact on self-image, is present in the works. The main messages of the works, in addition to processing the trauma and the disease, at once condensed into symbolic forms and made visible to the naked eye, include coming to terms with oneself and opening up to talking about cancer.
