Honorable Deputy Rector, Honorable Deans, Respectable Professors, All of our guests, Dear Students, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is an honor for me to address you, the newly enrolled students of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences and of the College of Health Care – on behalf of the Council of Semmelweis University and myself, when we start our 236th academic year.

Semmelweis University has a more than 230 year-old tradition of academic excellence and commitment to the education of physicians. It is always a great pleasure and anticipation to welcome our new students, to see a new generation of enthusiastic and determined young people who wish to continue and improve the achievements of the predecessors and I am sure you will maintain the standard and traditions of our University.

This is the 16th academic year when we welcome new students for our Programs in English which was launched in 1989 on three of our faculties; the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. Then, in my opening address I stressed what a challenge it was for us to take part in a new, international training programs. It was a challenge as well as an honor and responsibility to teach young people from various countries of the world.

Now that we have fifteen academic years behind us, I am proud that most of our expectations have been gratified. Nearly two thousand students from about 40 countries from Norway to Greece and from Israel to the United States started their studies during these years. Since then Semmelweis University issued more than 1000 diplomas on the three faculties to our graduate students of the English Program. I am glad to announce that the Semmelweis diplomas were widely accepted in Europe and overseas, and I would like to stress that upon joining the European Union in May, 2004, the recognition of our diploma was legally guaranteed in Europe. All our graduates have been able to start their carrier in their home countries.

The location of Hungary makes it possible for you to get acquainted – during the time you spend here – with the neighboring countries, too. While you stay in Hungary you will be able to come close to the culture, history and traditions of Hungary, the not very easy language and become part of the life of Budapest, the capital of this country. You can also establish friendships during your stay here with your fellow Hungarian and German students. Most of our graduate students consider Hungary as their second home country, cherishing their memories of merry student life and longing to return. Take my advice and study with all your efforts because your selected profession Medicine is a science which needs motivation, deep devotion, a life-long self sacrifice and uninterrupted studies.

Remember that a young person with strong will power is able to overcome any difficulties and achieve any goals he sets his heart on. The years you spend here and the friendships you make may be the basis of a life-long successful career and personal happiness. In the end I would like to wish you all successful years in your studies, which I can assure you will not be an easy ride. Thank you for your attention.

Wir sind heute hier zusammengekommen, um das Studienjahr 2004/2005 – das 236. Studienjahr der Semmelweis Universität – zu eröffnen. Für den deutschsprachigen Studiengang ist dies die Eröffnung des 22. Studienjahres. Es freut mich sehr, Sie hier an unserer Universität begrüßen zu dürfen und ich glaube, auch Sie freuen sich, dass Sie einen Studienplatz für Medizin bei uns an der Semmelweis Universität erhalten haben.

Von über 1000 Bewerbern eine Auswahl zu treffen war keine leichte Aufgabe; es bürdet Ihnen eine größere Verantwortung auf. Viele der Bewerber sind nicht zum Zuge gekommen. Nützen Sie deshalb die Ihnen gegebene Gelegenheit. Sie haben sich einen der schönsten, aber auch einen der schwersten Berufe ausgewählt, die Medicina. Wir wünschen Ihnen von ganzem Herzen, dass Ihnen das Studium gelingt und Sie gute Ärzte und Zahnärzte werden. Etwa 3000 deutsche Studenten waren bisher an unserer Universität immatrikuliert.

400 Diplome der Medizin und 200 Diplome der Zahnmedizin wurden verliehen.

Viele kehren nach dem vorklinischen Studienabschnitt nach Deutschland zurück, um das Studium dort abzuschließen, andere beenden ihr Studium in Ungarn, an der Semmelweis Universität.

Sicherlich ist Ihnen bekannt, dass das Diplom der Semmelweis Universität auch bisher in Deutschland und in verschiedenen anderen Ländern anerkannt wurde. Seit 1. Mai 2004 – seitdem Ungarn Mitglied der Europäischen Union ist –, ist die Anerkennung des Diploms in den EU-Staaten gesetzlich geregelt. Wir sind uns darüber im Klaren, dass es nicht immer leicht sein wird, ein fremdes Land, andere Gepflogenheiten und – für die meisten von Ihnen – die fremde Sprache zu meistern.

Erschrecken Sie nicht, wenn die Flut von Problemen am Anfang groß ist. Dies sollte für Sie kein Grund zum Aufgeben sein, und vergessen Sie auch nicht, dass wir bemüht sind, Ihnen bei allen Ihren Problemen zu helfen. Wir würden uns freuen, wenn Sie in den nächsten Jahren Ihres Aufenthaltes in Ungarn – das Land, seine Kultur, seine Geschichte – nicht zuletzt mit dem Erlernen der ungarischen Sprache – kennenlernen wollen.

In diesem Sinne darf ich Sie – auch im Namen der Semmelweis Universität, des Universitätsrates und der Medizinischen Fakultät – willkommen heißen. Abschließend möchte ich die Gelegenheit nutzen, auch Ihre Eltern herzlich zu begrüßen und ihnen versichern, dass Ihre Kinder in unserem Land in guten Händen sind.
