Limb-lengthening can be used to replace missing bone and lengthen and/or straighten deformed bone segments. The procedures may be performed on both children and adults who have limb length discrepancies due to birth defects, diseases or injuries. Nerve injury is one of the most serious complications of limb-lengthening. As a result, pain, sensory loss and motor weakness are the most frequent symptoms in patients who had this type of operation. Despite of the fact that this is a common practice, the precise aetiology of nerve injury is still unknown.

Using immunohistochemistry and confocal image analysis the morphological and neurochemical changes in the lumbar dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord segments in rabbits are investigated in our lab. We hope that our findings may lead to the prevention or at least to more efficient treatment of disorders related to limb-lengthening.
