Aims of tuition:The student should acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge that a non
ophthalmologist (dentist) needs to recognize the serious eye diseases that threaten with blindness.
Should know prevention, screening and first aid of eye diseases. Should know appropriate
knowledge of symptomatology of eye diseases that require specialized ophthalmologic treatment.
Lectures:
1. Functional anatomy. Investigative methods in ophthalmology
2. Anamnesis. Visuadisturbances, visual loss. Pain. Pupillary reactions.
3. Examination of vision. Refractive errors and their corrections.
4. Refractive surgery. Cataract.
5. Ophthalmological pharmacology
6. Glaucoma
7. Diseases of the eyelids, adnexa and orbit. Exopthalmos. Relation with oral surgery
8. Differential diagnosis of the red eye
9. Sudden visual loss
10. Main causes of blindness in posterior segment
11. Problems of pediatric ophthalmology. Disturbances in ocular motion. Strabismus,
amblyopia, diplopia
12. Ocular traumatology. Intraocular tumors.
Seminars:
1. Every-day practice in ophthalmology: automatic refractometer, lens probe-set, slit lamp,
examination of eye pressuere
2. Every-day practice in ophthalmology: eversion of the eyelid. Funuscopy (methods,
practice on a model). Optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography.

Competence assessment
1. Competence in practice
Evaluation of near and far visual acuity.
2. Confrontal examination of visual field
3. Examination of eye movement in 6 main directions
4. Examination of ocular alignment
5. Examination of pupillary reactions and size
6. Examination of anterior segment with pupillary lamp
7. Appraisal of eye tension by touching
8. Eversion of upper eyelid
9. Removal of conjunctival foreign body
Practical knowledge
Recognition of ophthalmic problem:
1. Deterioration of visual acuity
2. Differentiation of red eye (conjunctivitis, keratitis, anterior uveitis, acute glaucoma).
4. Hemianopic and bitemporal visual field defect.
5. Acute palsy of nerves III, IV and VI. Strabismus
6. Leukocoria.
7. Pupillary reactions
Treatment at own responsibility:
1. Conjunctivitis (viral, bacterial, allergic).
First aid:
1. Chemical injury
2. Conjunctival foreign body
3. Acute glaucoma
Reasons for acute ophthalmic referral
1. Sudden visual loss, visual field defect
2. Chemical injuries
3. Acute glaucoma attack
4. Blunt and penetrating trauma
5. Corneal ulcer
6. Corneal foreign body
Reasons of regular ophthalmic control:
1. Diabetes mellitus
2.Glaucoma

Requirements of participation at practices and substitution of absences: Practices are held in
shadowing system after theoretical block (lectures and seminars). Successful test exam from the
material of theoretical block. Maximum 2 absences (2x30min) from the practices are accepted for
the signature of the semester. More absences have to be substituted individually.

 

Requirements of signature of the semester: No more than 2 absences and successful practice
examCalculation of the final mark: Performance at the final exam.Type of exam: Final (practice and theory). Successful practice exam is the prerequisite of the
final theoretical exam. Form of final theoretical exam: Written.Registration for the exam: Dates are given through the NEPTUN System. The number of
accepted students per day is limited.Modification of exam date: According to the rules of the NEPTUN System.Legitimating absences from exams: Absences from exams should be legitimated within 3
working days at the head of the department or the tutor of the subject. Exams can be repeated after
