In addition, the knowledge of various specialisations in the field of dentistry is important to medical students because later, as specialized medical doctors – regardless of their specialization – they will find numerous correlations and these skills will prove to be essential in case of many borderline diseases and to face diagnostic difficulties. During the course students learn about the method of oral examination and stomato-oncological screening. The practice focuses on the oral and dental contexts of disciplines of medicine. It is extremly important for future medical doctors to be aware of the symptoms of systemic diseases in the oral cavity and know which dental and oral diseases may lead to systemic diseases.

As practicing physicians you will be able to examine the oral cavity and the head and neck region, and interpret the lesions and altered functions, initiate the diagnostic and therapeutic process. In accordance with the preventive approch that is characteristic for today’s medicine, you will be able to prevent and detect tooth (oral) diseases of systemic effect at their early stage.

As an example, please find below some oral diseases and their diagnostic and treatment correlation with other medical specializations. It is clear from the list that dental and oral surgical diseases go far beyond the specializations represented by the clinics of the Dental Faculty.

Cleft lip and palate – Pediatric Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Obstretrics and gynecology, Neonatology

Disease of sinuses – Otorhinolaryngology

Allergic diseases – mucous and skin disorders – Dermatology, Internal medicine, Rheumatology, Allergology and immunology

Focal infections in the oral cavity – Focal disease – Internal medicine, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Urology, Otorhinolaryngology

Patints with increased bleedeng tendency – Internal medicine, Haematology

Imaging in head and neck region – Radiology

Treatment under general anesthesia – Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Internal medicine

Inflammatory diseases and sepsis – Intensive Care Medicine, Infectology, Microbiology

Oral/Head and neck tumors – Oncology, Oncoradiology, Vascular surgery, Neurosurgery, Gereral surgery, Rehabilitation and hospice, Pathology

Dental and oral surgery in elderly – Geriatrics

Injury of teeth, upper and lower jaw, soft tissue – Traumatology

Facial pain – Neurology

Diseases of the orbit caused by inflammation and injury – Traumatology, Opthalmology

Examination of tissue samples removed from the orofacial region – Pathology, Microbiology

Total or partial anodontia – Temporomandibular joint complaints – headache – Neurology, Gastroenterology

The above list clearly illustrates the complexity of oral diseases and that their treatment often requires multiple co-operation between a wide range of medical fields.

Dear Students

Please consider this subject and the practices held at the 6 clinics of the Dental Faculty that the skills and impressions you gaine during this short period will definitely be useful for your future carreer as a medical doctor – regardless of your specialization. In 3 educational days we cannot present our specialties thematically, from A to Z neither we can test your knowledge by oral exam. For this reason, we have created educational materials (slides) on the E-learning interface. The text of these educational materials are presented clearly, well-defined and comprehensibly in the test questions. Also, we have created a list of recommended textbooks on the E-learning interface for those students, who wish to acquire a deeper knowledge of certain topics. During patient examination our tutors focus on discussing topics that are closely related to general medical practice. I hope that you will find the above information useful and that this 1 week course will help you to develop your interest and acceptance towards the Subject. Best regards Dr. med. habil.
