During this clinical placement, as a sixth-year medical student, you will become part of the work of the Department of Emergency Medicine and experience how an emergency department operates in a real clinical environment.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the placement is to familiarize you with the specific features of emergency care and to apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you have already acquired in real patient care situations.<\/p>\n<p>During the placement, you can gradually take on an increasingly active role: from observation and assisting with individual tasks to conducting patient assessments, documentation and patient pathway management under direct supervision, and eventually taking on more independent clinical activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What will you learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergency patient assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>emergency assessment of patients and the basics of triage<\/li>\n<li>complaint-oriented history taking and physical examination<\/li>\n<li>recognition of warning signs, or \u201cred flags\u201d<\/li>\n<li>ABCDE-based assessment of the critically ill patient<\/li>\n<li>emergency-oriented interpretation of abnormalities identified during the examination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Clinical reasoning and patient management<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>developing a diagnostic plan<\/li>\n<li>ordering appropriate investigations and interpreting their results<\/li>\n<li>initiating the management of common emergency conditions<\/li>\n<li>developing a treatment plan<\/li>\n<li>requesting and organizing specialist consultations<\/li>\n<li>organizing the patient\u2019s further placement and care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bedside and diagnostic skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the placement, you will have the opportunity to become familiar with and interpret a range of investigations, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ECG<\/li>\n<li>pulse oximetry<\/li>\n<li>blood pressure measurement<\/li>\n<li>body temperature measurement<\/li>\n<li>ETCO\u2082 monitoring<\/li>\n<li>blood gas analysis<\/li>\n<li>point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)<\/li>\n<li>Schellong test<\/li>\n<li>fecal occult blood testing<\/li>\n<li>rapid antigen tests for infectious diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Documentation and communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>appropriate documentation of the medical history, physical examination findings and current complaints<\/li>\n<li>documentation of treatment and the discharge summary<\/li>\n<li>introduction to the basics of medical coding<\/li>\n<li>structured communication within the healthcare team<\/li>\n<li>use of the SBAR communication framework<\/li>\n<li>communication with patients and their relatives<\/li>\n<li>consultation and cooperation with other medical specialties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Non-technical skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In emergency care, professional knowledge is only part of what matters. During the placement, you will also develop:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>teamwork<\/li>\n<li>communication<\/li>\n<li>decision-making<\/li>\n<li>task prioritization<\/li>\n<li>situational awareness<\/li>\n<li>responsible clinical practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How do we learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introductory training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The clinical placement is preceded by an <strong>8-hour introductory training session<\/strong>, consisting of lectures and workshops.<\/p>\n<p>You will become familiar with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the specific features of Emergency Medicine as an independent medical specialty<\/li>\n<li>the organization of emergency care<\/li>\n<li>how the clinical placement operates<\/li>\n<li>the tasks expected of you during the placement<\/li>\n<li>the practical information necessary for working more independently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Clinical placement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the introductory training, the placement takes place in <strong>8-hour shifts<\/strong>, according to the working schedule of the Department of Emergency Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Shifts may take place during both daytime and nighttime hours.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout your placement, you will receive continuous professional support and supervision from the senior physician in charge of the shift, as well as from the residents, paramedics and Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) working during the shift.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gradual development of independence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the placement, your responsibilities will be adapted to your individual progress and level of competence.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Observer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You observe the work of the assigned healthcare professional and the process of emergency patient care.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Assistant<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You assist the assigned healthcare professional and participate in individual tasks, such as patient assessment or documentation.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Patient care under direct supervision<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In consultation with your supervising healthcare professional, you participate in taking the patient&#8217;s history, performing the examination, developing diagnostic and treatment plans, organizing consultations and investigations, documenting care, and coordinating the patient&#8217;s further pathway through the healthcare system.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Patient care under the supervision of the shift leader<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As you progress through the placement, you will have the opportunity to participate increasingly independently in patient care, while your work continues to be supervised and supported by the senior physician in charge of the shift.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your development is supported through continuous feedback.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of each shift, you will receive feedback from the shift leader or a designated member of the healthcare team regarding your performance, opportunities for further development, and areas in which additional practice may be beneficial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do we assess your knowledge?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is <strong>no separate formal examination<\/strong> during the placement. Your performance is assessed continuously as part of your clinical work.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is not to pass a one-time examination, but to demonstrate how you develop throughout the placement in patient assessment, clinical reasoning, communication and patient pathway management.<\/p>\n<p>During the placement, we assess, among other things, whether you are able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take a patient&#8217;s history and perform a physical examination<\/li>\n<li>appropriately document the patient&#8217;s condition<\/li>\n<li>plan basic diagnostic steps<\/li>\n<li>initiate investigations and interpret their results<\/li>\n<li>develop a treatment plan<\/li>\n<li>present a patient case in a structured manner<\/li>\n<li>initiate and organize specialist consultations<\/li>\n<li>participate in arranging the patient&#8217;s further care and disposition<\/li>\n<li>communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and members of the healthcare team<\/li>\n<li>incorporate feedback into subsequent patient care situations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Minimum requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completion of at least <strong>15 shifts<\/strong> is required to successfully complete the placement.<\/p>\n<p>Students must independently assess and process at least one patient case and present it in a structured format following the sequence:<\/p>\n<p><strong>history \u2013 physical examination \u2013 diagnosis \u2013 treatment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the final five shifts, students are required to undertake more independent clinical activities.
