{"id":8886,"date":"2013-05-16T15:44:20","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T13:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/phd\/2013\/05\/16\/cas-twas-presidents-fellowship-programme-for-phd-candidates-from-developing-countries-2\/"},"modified":"2013-05-16T15:44:20","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T13:44:20","slug":"cas-twas-presidents-fellowship-programme-for-phd-candidates-from-developing-countries-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/phd\/2013\/05\/16\/cas-twas-presidents-fellowship-programme-for-phd-candidates-from-developing-countries-2\/","title":{"rendered":"CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship Programme For PhD Candidates from Developing Countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Call for Applications<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">According to a new agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, up to 140 students\/scholars per year from the developing world will be sponsored to travel to China for up to four years\u2019 of PhD study and research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">The CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship Programme provides students\/scholars from developing countries with the opportunity to pursue PhDs at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and\/or institutes of CAS around China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Under the terms of the new CAS-TWAS agreement, TWAS will be responsible for providing round-trip travel support for 50 awardees each year to and from China, or for providing one way travel support for 80 awardees each year to China. TWAS will make active efforts to secure additional funds to cover more awardees for travel supports. In addition, TWAS will also cover visa related expenses and a contribution to excess luggage fees for stays in China of more than 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">CAS will be responsible for a monthly payment to cover accommodation and living expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Successful applicants will receive a monthly stipend (including living expenses, local <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">travel expenses<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"> and health insurance) of RMB 7,000 (approx. USD 1,100) or RMB 8,000 (approx. 1,250) from CAS, depending on whether he\/she has passed a qualification test after admission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">The Fellowship awardee who fails the qualification test twice within one year will face the consequences including:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">1. termination of his\/her Fellowship;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">2. discontinuity of his\/her PhD study;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">3. getting a diploma of completion<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Awardees of the Fellowship will be exempted from tuition fees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">The funding duration of the Program is 4 years, divided into: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maximum 1 year study of courses, including 4 months compulsory courses in Chinese Language and Culture.<\/li>\n<li>Practical research and completion of degree dissertation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>General conditions for applicants:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Applicants must:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not take up other assignments during the period of his\/her this fellowship;<\/li>\n<li>Be a national of a developing country other than China;<\/li>\n<li>Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in a developed country;<\/li>\n<li>Be financially responsible for any accompanying family member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Applicants for PhD Study Scholarship should also:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maximum age of 35 years on 31 December in the year of application<\/li>\n<li>Have a master degree before the beginning of the fall semester.<\/li>\n<li>Provide evidence that he\/she will return to their home country on completion of their studies in China according to CAS-TWAS agreements.<\/li>\n<li>Provide proof of knowledge of English or Chinese language e.g. studies taken in these languages, certificates etc.<\/li>\n<li>Provide recommendation letters from two professors in a relevant field, for example the applicant\u2019s supervisor at the home institution or head of department and\/or an eminent scientist from outside the home institution. If a TWAS member is familiar with the applicant\u2019s work he may ask him\/her for a letter of support. Due to privacy reasons, TWAS cannot provide contact details of TWAS members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>How to apply for the Fellowship<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Download and fill in the \u201cAdmission Application Form for International Students\u201d and \u201cApplication Form for the CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><strong>See the attachment<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">), and submit these two application forms (Supervisor\u2019s Comment Pages not to be included) with the following materials to the Office of CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship Programme:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Notarized photocopy of the highest degree certificate (This year&#8217;s graduates provide a pre-graduation certificate);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Notarized photocopy of the transcript of all undergraduate or graduate study;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Curriculum vitae and detailed research proposal;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Photocopy of the first page of a regular passport<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Photocopy of the title page and abstract of each published academic paper;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Foreigner Physical Examination Form;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial Unicode MS'\"><strong>\uff1a<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Contact professors and get agreement from a Professor to be your tutor (supervising professor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">Send the Supervisor\u2019s Comment Pages in the \u201cApplication Form for the CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship\u201d to your host supervisor\/ tutor (supervising professor in China), and ask him\/her to fill in the comment pages. Make sure that your host supervisor\/tutor (supervising professor) will send the completed \u201ccomment pages\u201d directly to the Office of CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship Programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">The applicant must obtain recommendation letters from two professors in a relevant field, for example the applicant\u2019s supervisor at the home institution or head of department and\/or an eminent scientist from outside the home institution. If a TWAS member is familiar with his\/her work the applicant may ask him\/her for a letter of support. Due to privacy reasons, TWAS cannot provide contact details of TWAS members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, serif\">The applicants who do need travel support for international travel to and from China, should provide a separate written request and send the request together with the \u201cApplication Form for the CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship\u201d to the Office of CAS-TWAS President\u2019s Fellowship Programme.
