While much attention has been given to healthcare&#8217;s carbon footprint, there are broader\u2014and in many cases, more urgent\u2014ecological issues linked to <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>how we design, prescribe, and dispose of medicines.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Lifecycle Thinking<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Environmental impact should be considered from drug development to disposal\u2014not just during patient use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Eco-Design<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Encouraging the use of **biodegradable APIs** and green chemistry in pharmaceutical manufacturing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span style=\"color: #000000\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Responsible Prescribing<\/b><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Avoiding unnecessary prescriptions, especially antibiotics, and supporting deprescribing when appropriate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Transparent Data<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Mandating environmental risk disclosures for all medicines and making this information publicly available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Safe Disposal<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Strengthening medicine return programs and public awareness to prevent environmental contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2714 <span lang=\"en-GB\"><b>Cross-Sector Collaboration<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">: Sustainability in healthcare requires cooperation between regulators, industry, academia, and prescribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Tools supporting more environmental-responsible prescribing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd39<span lang=\"en-GB\">New EU Standards: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) updated its \u201cEnvironmental Risk Assessment (ERA)\u201d guidelines in September 2024, introducing a more rigorous framework for evaluating a drug\u2019s environmental footprint during market authorization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd39<span lang=\"en-GB\">Sweden\u2019s \u201cPharmaceuticals and Environment\u201d database (Janusinfo) ranks over 850 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) by environmental risk\u2014helping inform safer prescribing choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-GB\">Every prescription we write carries an environmental footprint as well.
