Nevertheless, periodontology has been formally taught since the foundation of the Faculty of Dentistry (1955). Before 1997, the periodontal department was one of the divisions of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Sug\u00e1r and Prof. Korn\u00e9lia Sallay were the pioneers of periodontology here in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Profile<br \/>\n<\/strong>Periodontal and oral mucous membrane diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education<br \/>\n<\/strong>Periodontology is taught\u00a0over four semesters in Hungarian, English and German.\u00a0\u00a0Eighteen dental units are available for undergraduate students on the 2nd floor of the building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Care<br \/>\n<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1502 alignleft\" title=\"Patient care at the Department of Periodontology\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/05\/IMG_1968_cropped_350px.jpg\" alt=\"Patient care at the Department of Periodontology\" width=\"350\" height=\"244\" \/>The Department occupies the 4th floor of the new Dental Clinical Centrum. It has\u00a0 seventeen\u00a0 dental chairs\u00a0 serving the faculty practice and postgraduate residency programs. The\u00a0 annual patient turnover is very high. Annually, the seven faculty members and the periodontal residents, with the help of their students,\u00a0 treat\u00a0 approximately 14,000-15,000 patients. Patients with gum and periodontal diseases and also those with oral diseases are treated and followed up. Annually, 1500 to 2,000\u00a0 periodontal surgeries and\u00a0 comprehensive periodontal reconstructions are carried out. Patients are accepted from all over Hungary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Department participates in one accredited Ph.D. programme, and currently has three Ph.D. students.
