What is PPC? \u2013 Comfort-Focused Care for Children<\/h3>\n

PPC stands for Paediatric Palliative Care: palliative care for children with a focus on comfort. It is an active and comprehensive approach that addresses the child\u2019s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.<\/p>\n

\n

The aim of care is to improve the child\u2019s quality of life and support the entire family throughout the course of the illness.<\/strong> Palliative care includes managing distressing symptoms, promoting rest and comfort, and providing continuous support from the time of diagnosis through the child\u2019s death and into bereavement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Palliative Care and Curative Treatment<\/h3>\n

Many people believe that receiving palliative care means giving up on curative treatment. This is a misconception. Comfort care is provided alongside and in addition to treatments aimed at curing the illness. Our goal<\/strong> is not to replace curative treatment, but to maximise the child\u2019s comfort and quality of life<\/strong> at every stage of the illness.<\/p>\n

When and Whom Do We Support?<\/h3>\n

Comfort care is available to any family where:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • a child is living with a serious, life-threatening or life-limiting condition<\/strong>;<\/li>\n
  • symptoms<\/strong> such as pain, breathlessness or anxiety make everyday life harder<\/strong>;<\/li>\n
  • the family simply needs more support<\/strong> than conventional medical care can provide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    From the time of diagnosis<\/strong> \u2013 Ideally, we become involved as soon as the diagnosis is communicated to the family.<\/p>\n

    Throughout treatment<\/strong> \u2013 We are available whenever additional support is needed because of the illness or the side effects of treatment.<\/p>\n

    Continuously, for as long as needed<\/strong> \u2013 Our care extends from diagnosis throughout the course of the illness and, where necessary, through the end-of-life period and the family\u2019s bereavement.<\/p>\n

    Paediatric Palliative Care in Hungary<\/h3>\n

    Paediatric palliative and hospice care has been an integral part of modern paediatric healthcare worldwide for nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n

    In Hungary, it began to develop approximately 15\u201320 years ago<\/strong> and has since made significant progress. At the forefront of this development, the Palliative and Comfort Care Unit at Semmelweis University is taking carefully planned strategic steps and continuously expanding its care services to help ensure that every seriously ill child in Hungary receives the attention and care they deserve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
