The primary objective of the visit was to discuss the programs that will be realised in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2011. The discussions mainly focused on teacher and student mobility, research collaboration and emergency medicine.<\/p>\n<p>On the first day the UMMS delegation was welcomed by Rector \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l at the Rector\u2019s Office. After the first meeting the Directorate of International Relations presented the Central Administrative Building and the Inner Clinical Campus to the guests. Dr. Gy\u00f6ngyi Szab\u00f3, UMMS\u2019 vice-chair for research had meetings with various heads of department and department employees in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Dr. Gregory A. Volturo, director of UMMS\u2019 Department of Emergency Medicine and Dr. Alexander Matolcsy, professor at the UMMS\u2019 Department of Emergency Medicine were presented the Cardiovascular Centre by Director B\u00e9la Merkely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2014\/04\/After-the-meeting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3993 aligncenter\" title=\"Group photo in the Senate Hall\" alt=\"From left to right: Dr. Marcel Pop, Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Hunyady, Dr. M\u00e1ria Judit Moln\u00e1r, Dr. Gyongyi Szabo, Dr. Gregory A. Volturo, Dr. \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l, Dr. J\u00e1nos G\u00e1l, Dr. Alexander Matolcsy, Dr. D\u00e1vid T\u00e1rnoki, Dr. \u00c1d\u00e1m T\u00e1rnoki\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2014\/04\/After-the-meeting.jpg\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The delegation also visited the Balassi Institute to discuss the scholarship opportunities available to Hungarian students. The following day, the delegation and Rector \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l met with Zolt\u00e1n Balog, Hungary\u2019s Minister for Human Resources. Following the meeting, Dr. Mikl\u00f3s Kellermayer, vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine briefly introduced the educational and research activities of the Centre of Theoretical Medicine. The delegation later participated at the topping-out ceremony of the Central Medical Building that is being built in the framework of the Kor\u00e1nyi Project.<\/p>\n<p>On the third day of the visit, Dr. J\u00e1nos G\u00e1l, vice-rector for clinical affairs and Dr. P\u00e9ter Kanizsai, assistant professor welcomed Dr. Volturo and Dr. Matolcsy at Semmelweis University\u2019s Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy. The 1<sup>st<\/sup> Department of the Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research was presented to the delegation by Director Andr\u00e1s Matolcsy. Afterwards, Dr. P\u00e9ter Kanizsai accompanied the two professors to the Central Military Hospital where Dr. G\u00e1bor Zacher, head of the Department of Emergency Medicine welcomed them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2014\/04\/Rector-Sz\u00e9l-and-Prof.-Volturo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3994\" alt=\"Rector Sz\u00e9l and Prof. Volturo shake hands after the signature of the Work Plan\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2014\/04\/Rector-Sz\u00e9l-and-Prof.-Volturo-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the framework of the visit, a Work Plan on the student exchange programmes between Semmelweis University and UMMS was drawn up and signed by Rector \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l and Dr. Bereczki D\u00e1niel, vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine and director of the Department of Neurology on the part of Semmelweis University, and by Dr. Volturo, Dr. Matolcsy and Dr. Szab\u00f3 on part of the University of Massachusetts Medical School.<\/p>\n<p>The recent visit of the UMMS delegation was preceded by a Memorandum of Understanding which was signed by Dr. \u00c1goston Sz\u00e9l and by Dr. Michael Collins, chancellor of the UMMS in October 11, 2011. Since then the leaders and professors of the two universities visited each other\u2019s institutions primarily in order to identify the possible areas of cooperation. \u00a0Following a high-level visit in 2013, Rector Sz\u00e9l created a Committee tasked specifically with developing the SE-UMMS relations.
