While these measures help bridge linguistic barriers, their availability and use vary significantly across Europe. To strengthen equity, access and patient safety, a new research project compares language assistance systems across five European countries to identify practical solutions that can be adapted in different healthcare settings. The project\u202fcalled\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euniwell.eu\/what-we-offer\/seed-funding-programme\/projects-of-the-ninth-seed-funding-call-2025\/langcare-multilingual-patient-safety-comparative-study-of-language-assistance-in-healthcare\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">LangCare\u202f(Multilingual Patient Safety: Comparative Study of Language Assistance in Healthcare)\u202f<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is coordinated by\u202f\u00c1gnes Horv\u00e1th,\u202fAssistant Professor\u202fat Semmelweis University.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"w-100 keretes\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">Patients who do not speak the language of the healthcare system may struggle to understand diagnoses, treatment instructions, or medication use, which can<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">reduce treatment compliance and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">\u00a0lead to complications or repeated hospital visits. In many cases, family members are asked to interpret, which may result in incomplete or inaccurate communication. Language barriers can also limit access to important services, such as screenings, and contribute to delays in treatment or unnecessary repeated tests. These gaps not only affect patient safety and increase healthcare costs, but can also raise serious legal and ethical concerns, particularly when patients are unable to give fully informed consent<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">\u201d\u202f<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">says<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW237129203 BCX4\">\u202f\u00c1gnes.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW237129203 BCX4\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"w-100\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project aims to improve well-being, protect linguistic diversity and foster intercultural communication, which fully aligns with the mission of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euniwell.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EUniWell<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the European University for Well-Being. Consequently, after it was submitted to its\u202f9th\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euniwell.eu\/what-we-offer\/seed-funding-programme\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Seed Funding Call<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, LangCare was among the 10 selected projects for funding out of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euniwell.eu\/news-events\/article\/10-projects-selected-for-funding-under-the-9th-euniwell-seed-funding-call\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">record number of 70 submissions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"w-100 keretes\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFor me, well-being in healthcare starts with having access to the services one is entitled to. It also means understanding my condition and the available treatment options, so that I can make informed decisions about my own health. At the same time, I see well-being as not only a matter of access to information, but also how that information is communicated and how patients are treated. Feeling safe, respected, understood and able to trust healthcare providers is essential, especially in vulnerable situations. This is why, in my work, language and communication are central to ensuring both patient safety and equitable access to care,\u201d says \u00c1gnes, reflecting on the importance of well-being. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"w-100\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bringing together\u202f12 universities, including Semmelweis University,\u202fEUniWell is a hub for innovative interdisciplinary collaboration, research, educational\u202fleadership\u202fand civic engagement \u2013 all focused on improving social,\u202fmental\u202fand physical well-being.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"w-100 keretes\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEUniWell makes it possible to directly compare healthcare systems across countries and bring together perspectives from medicine, linguistics, and social sciences,\u201d\u202fexplains \u00c1gnes.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the project is led by academic staff and students from Semmelweis University, it is a shared effort with five other EUniWell partner Universities: the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) and the Universities of Birmingham, Florence, Murcia and Santiago de Compostela, as well as the Associated Partners Universidad de Granada, Universitad de La Laguna, Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Barcelona and Universidad de Alicante.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"w-100 keretes\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of the main challenges of the project lies in ensuring meaningful comparability across different national healthcare systems. Although all partner teams follow a shared 47-point methodological framework, language assistance practices are embedded in very different legal, institutional, and organisational contexts, which can make direct comparison complex. A further challenge is maintaining consistency in data interpretation across countries, despite the use of a common guide. However, this is addressed through coordinated research design and regular alignment among partners.
