Based on the current online <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">discussion<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sixth<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">-year medical students of the International University of Health and Welfare <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">w<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ould also <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">have the opportunity to<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> complete their four-week compulsory clinical <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">training practice<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> at Semmelweis University. According to plans, the Japanese institution would also receive Hungarian students in the future.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25377\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/04\/RS82335_IMG_3822-scr-1-274x400-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"400\" \/>An online discussion was held <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">between<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">Dr<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Kuni Ohtomo, President of International University of Health and Welfare (IUHW) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">from Japan<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">. The meeting was initiated by the Japanese partner university, during which university leaders agreed to expand the cooperation between the two institutions so that <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sixth<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">-year Japanese medical students would have the opportunity to complete <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">compulsory <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">four-<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">week<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">clinical <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">training practice, as required by the IUHW curriculum,<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> at Semmelweis University <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">starting<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> from 2022. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The virtual meeting was attended by <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Mikl\u00f3s Kellermayer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Marcel Pop, Director of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Directorate of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">International Relation<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Yasuhiro Suzuki, Vice-Rector and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Haruko Akatsu, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">At the beginning of the meeting, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">B\u00e9la Merkely, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Rector<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> gave a brief introduction <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">about <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Semmelweis University, with particular reference to the institution\u2019s existing Japanese co<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">operations<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and clinical capacity, emphasizing that the university is extremely open to further developing <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> collaboration with IUHW.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Afterwards<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. Yasuhiro Suzuki outlined the main topic of the discussion: from <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the spring of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">2022, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sixth-year medical students <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of IUHW<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> w<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ould like to<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> be able to complete at least four weeks of clinical <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">training <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">practice overseas, including in Hungary. In response, Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely explained that <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">within<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> a practice period at Semmelweis University, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the institution<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> could receive 30-30 Japanese students in two shifts, who could spend 4-10 weeks at <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the departments of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Semmelweis University. The <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">clinical training <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">practice<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> could be <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">accomplished<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> by each student <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">at<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> one <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">department<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> or <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">at<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> several <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">departments<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> on a rotating basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">This was followed by further details such as expectations <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">related to English language proficiency<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, student placement, and communication with non-English speaking patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr. Haruko Akatsu raised the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">opportunity<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> of Semmelweis University sending students to IUHW. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">According to D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. B\u00e9la Merkely, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">this would be an <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">excellent opportunity. He believed that the best way to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">carry<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> this <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">out <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">would be <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">if<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> some <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Semmelweis <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">students <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">would be able to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">spend a four-week period a<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">t <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the partner universit<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">y<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> in Japan. Dr. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Marcel <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Pop suggested that the two institutions jointly develop a program of excellence, in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the framework of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">which 2-2 students could participate in such an exchange program within <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">one academic<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25376\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25376\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/04\/ohtomo.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kuni Ohtomo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">At the end of the meeting, the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">R<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ector informed <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Dr. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">Kuni Ohtomo, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">President<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">that he will<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> travel to Japan this summer as a member of the Hungarian Olympic <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">elegation, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in the framework of which <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">a personal meeting <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">could be organized with<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the IUHW <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">P<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">resident and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">university <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The cooperation between Semmelweis University and IUHW started in 2015, and since then there have been several reciprocal visits to Japan and Hungary. In 2016, the two institutions signed cooperation agreements in several fields (student and teacher exchange programs, organization of clinical <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">training practices<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> for Japanese students, joint lectures and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the organization of<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> symposi<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">ums<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">). In March 2019, the orientation program <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of IUHW was held <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">at the Faculty of Health Sciences, in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the framework of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">which participants <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">had the opportunity to take part in<\/span> <span lang=\"en-US\">fee-paying<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> clinical <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">training <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">practices as observers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The International University of Health and Welfare was founded in 1995 in Otawara. It is Japan\u2019s first comprehensive university specializing in health and welfare that seeks to promote and improve the status of health professionals. It operates 22 departments at five faculties, where approximately 7,800 students study. Altogether, more than 21,000 former students, who graduated here, work in health care. In April 2017, an international medical faculty was established in Narita. Most of the lectures are also available in English, with tuition fees being the lowest among private medical universities nationwide. Their lecturers are from among the best lecturers at Japanese and foreign universities.
