Annoyed by the expense and limits of larger statues, he decided to use the format of city miniatures. The motives of the statues vary greatly: some are simply random and bizarre, whilst several commemorate important hungarians of the past and staples of hungarian media. We have therefore included a section in this guide where you can read more about each statue and it\u2019s motive to learn more about the history and culture of the country that you currently reside in.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>THE DEAD SQUIRREL:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wandering down beautiful tree-lined Falk Miksa Street you wouldn\u2019t expect to come across a murdered squirrel, his body outlined by chalk and his hand clutching a gun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We don\u2019t exactly know what happened to the furry victim (was it a homicide or suicide? Is the perpetrator still at large?). Lucky enough for the squirrel he was murdered next to the Columbo statue so it\u2019s a case that he\u2019s sure to be able to crack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/3RemvEGrwbhnjNr19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Falk Miksa street<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>KERMIT THE FROG:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are wandering along Szabads\u00e1g Square (Liberty Square) near Parliament you could very well miss Kermit the Frog if you don\u2019t happen to look down. Nestled next to the fence overlooking the square\u2019s caf\u00e9 you\u2019ll find this beloved Muppet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the statue was created to recognize when frog legs became a Hungarian delicacy in the late 19th century, don\u2019t worry! Kermit is well-loved and not likely to be eaten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ArneEuF79yFk72fg9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Szabads\u00e1g square 10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>F\u0150KUKAC:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you grew up in Hungary then you may remember the <\/span><b>TV series<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cA Nagy Ho-ho-ho Horg\u00e1sz\u201d (\u201c<\/span><b>The Big Ho-Ho Angler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d) about an oafish <\/span><b>fisherman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and his bait. It seems only fitting that Kolodko\u2019s <\/span><b>first miniature<\/b> <b>statue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> would be the show\u2019s character F\u0151kukac, a happy <\/span><b>little worm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who is no longer bait but instead leads a much better life sitting on the banks of the <\/span><b>Danube<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Bem Quay 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/uT3wjbei2xukEgeT9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bem rkp. 15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>TINY TANK:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of Kolodko\u2019s guerilla sculptures may be small but they offer a powerful message, including this mini tank, also found near the riverbank on Bem Quay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This tank symbolizes Hungary\u2019s 1956 revolution, as indicated by the bold white letting \u201cRuszkik Haza!\u201d (\u201cRussian\u2019s go home!\u201d) etched on the side of the tank. While the tank is facing Parliament its gun is facing downward to signify the end of the revolution<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kveFwCHCpmyJVN6v7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bem rkp. 27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>MEKK ELEK:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you were watching Hungarian cartoons in the 70s then you might remember the loveable Mekk Elek, the handyman goat who was endearingly inept. While he tries his hand at many different skills, it seems that Mekk Elek isn\u2019t really cut out for any of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Luckily, he is cut out to be an adorable mini statue at the foot of the stairs of Sz\u00e9ll K\u00e1lm\u00e1n Square near the Castle and luckily for all of us, he isn\u2019t doing any repairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sz\u00e9ll K\u00e1lm\u00e1n square<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>LIBIDO:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019d have to be on the hunt for this mini statue at the Pest entrance of the Chain Bridge in order to find it. Placed between the iron fence posts near the Corso Restaurant lies Libido, a balloon dog and homage to the scandalous artis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeffkoons.com\/artwork\/inflatables\/inflatable-flower-and-bunny-tall-white-pink-bunny\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeff Koons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who is also known for his balloon animals and inflatable sculptures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Belgr\u00e1d rkp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>TIVADAR HERZL:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theodor_Herzl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tivadar Herzl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was a Jewish Austrian-Hungarian journalist, writer and <\/span><b>political activist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who became known as the <\/span><b>father of modern Zionism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today you\u2019ll find a tiny sculpture of <\/span><b>Herzl with his bike<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (most likely inspired by a photo taken of Herzl with his bike in Austria) appropriately placed near the iconic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doh%C3%A1ny_Street_Synagogue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doh\u00e1ny Street Synagogue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/budapestflow.com\/explore-jewish-quarter-budapest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">7th district<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. On Doh\u00e1ny Street, not too far from his miniature likeness, you\u2019ll find his birth site, which is now the Jewish Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/VFeX54w3znCoCPcj6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Herzl Tivadar square<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>RUBIK\u2019S CUBE:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know that this popular puzzle toy is a Hungarian invention? So it should come as no surprise that Kolodko wanted to commemorate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubiks.com\/en-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rubik\u2019s Cube<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by making it into a miniature statue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While you won\u2019t be able to solve this puzzle you can enjoy its clever craftsmanship by heading to the Buda riverbank near Batthy\u00e1ny Square where you\u2019ll find it opposite Parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/FBLggWBEPA23oKkU7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bem rkp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>DIVER:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re headed to the famous<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorkcafe.hu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Caf\u00e9<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you\u2019ll find the \u201ckey\u201d to the caf\u00e9 resting in the hands of a diver at the intersection of Doh\u00e1ny Street and Osv\u00e1t Street. Legend has it that the Hungarian author Ferenc Moln\u00e1r tossed the caf\u00e9\u2019s key into the river to prevent it from ever closing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perhaps Moln\u00e1r\u2019s outburst worked, as the caf\u00e9 is still just as popular today as it was at the turn of the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/6ZnMdjM11kNhP66W9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ostv\u00e1th street 53.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>LUNAR ROVER:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being a nation of inventors, it\u2019s never a surprise that a Hungarian turns out to be behind an innovative new piece of technology. Ferenc Pavlics escaped to the US after the 1956 Revolution and ended up working for NASA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was he who came up with the lightweight but resilient wheels needed to traverse the Moon on the Lunar Rover. Pavlics was given a NASA award for his achievement. Appropriately, this one can be found on Hold (Moon in English) street on its own moon-shaped bollard<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/U2SLUrpVgct1FhKE9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hold street 12.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>URINAL:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of Kolodko\u2019s oldest (and easiest to miss) works. This one is tucked away on the wall surrounding Vajdahunyad Castle moat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A tribute to Marcel Duchamp\u2019s controversial 1917 sculpture, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fountain_(Duchamp)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fountain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (itself a signed porcelain urinal), we\u2019re left guessing at the Kolodko\u2019s intentions. Is he alluding to the lack of public toilets in the area? Or is he literally just taking the piss?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/45deniXc2gkcysd47\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winston Churchill stny.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><b>REZS\u0150 SERESS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gloomy Sunday, bleakly and infamously known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=55FP1LfkkVQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hungarian Suicide song<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> due to the supposed influence it had on suicide rates in the \u201830s, was the work of Rezs\u0151 Seress, who lived and worked in the <\/span><b>Kispipa bar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in District VII. A <\/span><b>survivor of WWII labour camps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a former trapeze artist, Seress focused on songwriting after an injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He could have collected a fortune in royalties for the song in the US, but instead stayed in the bohemian bar, writing, playing the piano and singing for the clientele. Years of depression followed and, after surviving a <\/span><b>suicide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> attempt from the upstairs window. This tribute to his talents is on the wall of the former Kispipa restaurant<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/9aMw3QDCgb82AYaq7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ak\u00e1cfa street 38.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CHECKERED-EARED RABBIT:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Continuing his nostalgic-look into Hungarian TV history, Kolodko presented the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kock\u00e1sf\u00fcl\u0171 ny\u00fal (checkered-eared rabbit)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in November 2018 at the top of the Castle Hill Funicular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Written in the 1970s by Veronika Mar\u00e9k and animated by Zsolt Richly, the show gained belated popularity around the world, especially in the US where it was shown on Nickelodeon after the fall of the Communist regime.This floppy-eared bunny has a bird\u2019s-eye view of the city, surveying the Danube through her telescope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Szent Gy\u00f6rgy square<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HANNA SZENES:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On International Women\u2019s Day 2020, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hosszulepes.org\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hossz\u00fal\u00e9p\u00e9s. J\u00e1runk?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> partnered with Mih\u00e1ly Kolodko to produce this wonderful tribute to a Jewish war hero, Hanna Szenes. Szenes volunteered to parachute into Yugoslavia during World War II in order to assist anti-Nazi forces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite being safely away from the Holocaust (living in the British Mandate of Palestine), she enlisted in the British Women\u2019s Auxiliary Airforce to work with partisans disrupting Nazi activity and preventing deportations to concentration camps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parachuting safely into Yugoslavia, Szenes learned that Hungary was now Nazi-occupied. Nevertheless, she continued onwards towards the border, where she was arrested by Hungarian guards, before being imprisoned, brutally tortured and executed. She had refused to reveal the information her captors sought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This tribute to an incredibly brave woman is also part of the #wonderwomenbudapest initiative which aims to rebalance the gender divide in the city\u2019s sculptures<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/S9SUZ4YyPxEU6oKs8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Szenes Hanna park<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AXE:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liberty Square has long been an ideological battleground, with controversial monuments from every political era of Hungary\u2019s history standing shoulder to shoulder and Kolodko audaciously entered the fray in 2019 with his Ushanka (Russian Hat) mini-statue, criticising a perceived continuing Russian influence in Hungarian politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, one far-right politician didn\u2019t take too kindly to it, destroying the statue with an axe and throwing it into the Danube. The sculptor responded with this sardonic comeback, both mocking and memorialising the violence of his aggressor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/NnjLbc6A1jrwmpz1A\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Szabads\u00e1g square 15.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>14-CARAT ROADSTER:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amongst his seemingly innocuous sculptures of <\/span><b>children\u2019s stories and old TV shows<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Mih\u00e1ly Kolodko has shown an inclination for celebrating the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/budapestflow.com\/explore-jewish-quarter-budapest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jewish history of District VII<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As well as his pieces on Hannah Szenes and Rezs\u0151 Seress, there\u2019s also this ritzy memorial to the work of writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jen%C5%91_Rejt%C5%91\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jen\u0151 Rejt\u0151<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, another <\/span><b>Jewish residen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t who wrote fantastical, breakneck-paced <\/span><b>pulp fictions stories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The 14-Carat Roadster is one of his most famous tales and can be found right in front of the Pesti Magyar Sz\u00ednh\u00e1z.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/y2tfrYCzxaRCBeZK6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hevesi S\u00e1ndor square 14.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>NOAH\u2019S ARK:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s worth finding the precise time of day to see this Ark, waiting until the sun hits just the right spot. If you do, you\u2019ll be rewarded with the rainbow that symbolised the end of the flood, recreated in its beautiful multicoloured windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was unveiled (along with the Roadster and Diver) in August 2019 and marked a period when Kolodko\u2019s mini-sculptures started getting a little less\u2026mini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/KiPx7weYWdHA4G3z6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bethlen G\u00e1bor square<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>BREXIT:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the UK finally exiting the European Union after a protracted withdrawal period, Kolodko has decided that we all need a bit of comforting with his latest piece, Brexit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mounted on the wall of the former British Embassy at Harmincad utca, this bear will be instantly recognizable to most as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mr._Bean\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr. Bean\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> beloved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mrbean.fandom.com\/wiki\/Teddy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teddy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
