{"id":27,"date":"2026-04-29T08:55:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T06:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/gsi\/?page_id=27"},"modified":"2026-08-24T11:52:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T09:52:30","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/gsi\/en\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About our Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute of Genetics, Cell Biology and Immunology was established in 1971 as the Institute of Biology <span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">at Semmelweis University<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">, before adopting its current name in 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first director of the Institute was Professor Gy\u00f6rgy Csaba, serving from 1971 to 1994. He was succeeded by Professor Andr\u00e1s Falus, who held the position from 1994 to 2012. The Institute is currently directed by Professor Edit Buz\u00e1s.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute carries out research and diagnostic activities, as well as providing teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students at Semmelweis University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Education<\/h2>\n<p>First- and second-year students from the Faculty of General Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy are taught by our Institute in Hungarian, English and German. Elective courses are available to undergraduate and PhD students. The Institute also provides research opportunities for undergraduates and PhD students. <a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/gsi\/en\/education\/\">Find out more about education \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Research<\/h2>\n<p>Our research covers a wide range of areas, including cell biology, immunology, molecular biology and oncobiology. The Institute is internationally recognised for its research into extracellular vesicles. The Institute is equipped with a transgenic animal facility, tissue culture laboratories, bacterial laboratories, virology laboratories and flow cytometry equipment, as well as magnetic and fluorescent cell sorters suitable for cell sorting. The Institute operates a transmission electron microscope and a Flow Cytometry Core Facility.
