In addition, damp weather clearly favors mold growth on fallen leaves, while the heating season creates ideal conditions for the development of dust allergies, says Dr. Helga Kraxner, Assistant Professor at Semmelweis University’s Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

According to the latest statistics from the Semmelweis HELP symptom-checking application, the number of symptom checks due to allergy-related complaints has increased noticeably during the fall months compared to the peak season in August. In early fall, there was a demonstrable increase in the number of inquiries regarding a runny or itchy nose and nasal congestion, as well as a moderate rise in those concerning eyelid swelling. Moreover, sneezing and burning eyes were among the most frequently checked symptoms.

Dr. Helga Kraxner notes that the ragweed season was delayed this year; instead of the usual early to mid-August, it peaked in late August to early September, which explains the increase in the complaints mentioned in recent weeks. Although the drought somewhat slowed plant growth and thus pollen production, the lack of rainfall had the opposite effect, as there was no rain to periodically “wash” the pollen out of the air. The assistant professor adds that although ragweed pollen – and, in general, pollen from grasses that are still flowering – was present in the air in low concentrations in mid-October, the allergenic effect persists and may even intensify until consistently colder weather sets in.

As the weather becomes more humid, mold growing on fallen leaves causes allergic symptoms in those who are sensitive to it; for people with asthma, discomfort accompanied by shortness of breath is common at this time of year. Dr. Helga Kraxner advises them to wear a mask while doing yardwork, especially when raking leaves.

Anyone unsure whether their symptoms are caused by a cold or a lingering allergy can use the free Semmelweis HELP app, available to the general public so that they can check their symptoms in a matter of seconds and receive reliable, professional guidance on what steps to take.

It’s also a good idea for those allergic to house dust – or, more specifically, to the droppings of dust mites living in it – to be prepared. During the heating season, air circulates more freely in the home, and with it, the dust that has settled there. This dust consists not only of inorganic materials but also, to a significant extent, of dead human and animal skin cells and fungal spores. Dust mites’ main food source is shed skin cells, which – along with the dust mites themselves – can be found in large numbers in places such as beds. That is why regular cleaning is essential, as is frequent, regular washing of bedclothes at a temperature of at least 60 degrees Celsius, emphasizes Dr. Helga Kraxner.

Éva Haiman
Translation: Dr. Balázs Csizmadia
Photos by Attila Kovács – Semmelweis University; featured image: illustration

Damp weather favors mold growth, while the heating season contributes to the onset of dust allergies.

[129,286
339
post-49753","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","category-x-nyitolap","tag-prevention
["GET
