On June 24, the Senate of Semmelweis University awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa (PHC) to eighteen internationally renowned experts. Established this year, the title may be conferred upon Hungarian or non-Hungarian individuals who have made outstanding contributions to international education and scientific research. The recognition is awarded for high-level teaching activities in the field of medical and health sciences or other scientific disciplines, particularly within Semmelweis University\u2019s educational programs or at related higher education institutions and clinical training sites, such as undergraduate and graduate programs and residency training. At the ceremony held in the Semmelweis Salon, sixteen professionals were awarded the university\u2019s honorary title upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Medicine (\u00c1OK), while one awardee each from the Faculty of Dentistry (FOK) and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (GYTK) was also honored.<\/div>\n

In his opening speech, Rector Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely underlined that, like Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis, the esteemed colleagues who were today being named honorary professors at the university were united by an inner passion for teaching.<\/p>\n

Today is a special day, as this is the first time in the history of Semmelweis University that we are presenting this award, of which you are the first recipients. With this newly established award, we recognize outstanding educators and researchers who, through their exceptional work, contribute to our strategic mission: to serve the education of future generations at an even higher standard. – Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cOne of our institution\u2019s greatest strengths lies in our dedication to identifying, attracting and retaining talented individuals, and in fostering special bonds between mentors and mentees. At the end of his speech, he thanked the award recipients for all they had done for Semmelweis University, emphasizing that the impact of their work had profoundly shaped students\u2019 worldview, their relationship with science, and their understanding of the healing profession, all of which was evident in the institution\u2019s international successes, its rankings, as well as its popularity among students worldwide.<\/p>\n

Following the opening remarks, the ceremony continued with the laudation of the experts nominated by the faculties; at the same time, Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely and the deans of the respective faculties (Dr. P\u00e9ter Nyir\u00e1dy, \u00c1OK; Dr. G\u00e1bor Gerber, FOK; Dr. Istv\u00e1n Antal, GYTK) presented each recipient with an honorary professor certificate, a stole, and a pin. The awardees from the Faculty of Medicine were announced first.<\/p>\n

Dr. Edda Bahlmann<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Edda Bahlmann began her medical studies at Semmelweis University in 1986. In 1988, she transferred to the University of Hamburg, where she earned her PhD in Internal Medicine in 1993. Since October 1993, she has worked at the Department of Cardiology of Asklepios Clinic St. Georg under Professor Karl Heinz Kuck and Professor Stephan Willems. In 2014, she obtained her habilitation and venia legendi in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. She has been teaching at the Asklepios Campus Hamburg (ACH) of Semmelweis University for more than 15 years. She has participated in research groups and contributed to highly regarded publications in the field of cardiology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Dietmar Eduard Kivelitz<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Dietmar Eduard Kivelitz earned his PhD in 1993 at the University of M\u00fcnster. He taught at Charit\u00e9 Berlin from 1996 to 2007, where he obtained the venia legendi in Radiology in 2006. He became chief of radiology at the Albers-Sch\u00f6nberg-Institute for Diagnostic Radiology in 2007. In 2020, he was appointed Subchair for Radiology at Semmelweis University. He has been a very active member of the teaching faculty of the Asklepios Campus Hamburg of Semmelweis University from the very beginning, has done significant research and clinical work and has supervised many diploma theses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Lars Marquardt<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Dr. Lars Marquardt earned his PhD in 2003 at the University of Heidelberg and added a Doctor of Philosophy in 2010 at the University of Oxford. He was named Best Emerging Scientist by the European Stroke Organization in both 2007 and 2009. In 2014 he became the Chief of Neurology and Neurogeriatrics at the Asklepios Klinik Wandsbek. In 2020 he was appointed Subchair for Neurology at Semmelweis University. In addition to his clinical work, his scientific output and teaching activities, he is also active as an emergency physician.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Mechtler<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Mechtler is Medical Director of the Dent Neurologic Institute, Chief of Neuro-Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York, and Professor of Neurology and Neuro-oncology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned his medical degree from Semmelweis University in 1984 and continued his specialist training in the United States, where he obtained board certifications in neurology, neuroimaging, and neuro-oncology. He served as President of the American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN) and the Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA). He is an active university professor, researcher, practicing physician and an internationally recognized leading authority in the fields of headache medicine, neuro-oncology, and pain research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Martin Merkel<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Merkel earned his PhD summa cum laude at the University of Hamburg in 1996, where he later obtained the venia legendi for internal medicine in 2005. From 2007 to 2015 he worked at Asklepios Clinic St. Georg in the field of gastroenterology. Since 2017, he has served as Medical Director of the Endokrinologikum in Hamburg, the largest outpatient endocrinology center in northern Germany. Since the establishment of the Asklepios Campus Hamburg of Semmelweis University, he has been an active and dedicated member of its teaching faculty. He has taught gastroenterology and endocrinology, and more recently metabolism and translational medicine. From the very beginning, he has played an important role in developing teaching activities at the Campus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Tobias Nikolaus Meyer<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Tobias Nikolaus Meyer studied in Freiburg, where he earned his PhD in 1997, before moving to Ludwig Maximilians University Munich. From 1999 to 2002, he was a Renal Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School. He later worked at the University of Hamburg in the fields of nephrology, rheumatology, transplantation, endocrinology and diabetology, where he obtained the venia legendi in 2010. In 2014, he was appointed Head of Nephrology at Asklepios Clinic Barmbek. Since then, he has been a highly active and valued member of the teaching faculty at the Asklepios Campus Hamburg of Semmelweis University. In addition, he has been successful in securing research grants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Peter Nigrovic<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Peter A. Nigrovic, MD, is a distinguished physician-scientist at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital, Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. He uniquely bridges adult and pediatric rheumatology to transform our understanding of inflammatory arthritis across the human lifespan. Over twenty-five years, his laboratory has fundamentally redrawn the innate-immune map of joint inflammation. His groundbreaking 2010 Science<\/em> report on platelet crosstalk reframed cellular mechanisms in rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, his pioneering work on juvenile idiopathic arthritis established life-changing interleukin-1 blockade therapies and mapped fourteen critical genetic susceptibility loci.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Ren\u00e9 Horsleben Petersen<\/a><\/p>\n
\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He is an internationally recognized expert in thoracic surgery and minimally invasive lung procedures. As Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital, he has made an outstanding contribution to the development and popularization of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, especially VATS lobectomy and segmentectomy. His research focuses on minimally invasive surgery, surgical education and simulation, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs, and lung cancer screening. In addition to his scientific achievements, Professor Petersen is a dedicated educator who has trained and mentored thoracic surgeons worldwide. With his help, the first video-assisted lobectomy in Hungary was performed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Sven Petersen<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

PD Dr. Sven Petersen earned his PhD in 1995 at the University of Hamburg. In 1999, he worked as a research fellow at the Department of Experimental Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. After returning to Germany, he obtained the venia legendi in surgery at the University of Dresden in 2004. He received several awards for his habilitation and has since worked primarily in the fields of colorectal cancer and functional disorders of the rectum. Apart from his teaching and examining duties, he has also been very active in supervising students and has helped many of them successfully complete their diploma theses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Helmut Prosch<\/a><\/p>\n

He is Head of the Department of Thoracic Radiology at the Medical University of Vienna, is an internationally renowned thoracic radiologist and President of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI). He has been giving regular lectures at the Medical Imaging Center (OKK) of Semmelweis University since 2019 for Hungarian and international medical students, radiology residents, specialist candidates, and specialists. He has actively participated in the development of the professional concept of the Hungarian lung cancer screening program and is the organizer and instructor of several international thoracic radiology courses. As part of his close scientific cooperation with Semmelweis University, he has co-authored several international publications \u2013 including the development of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines \u2013 and has also involved the OKK staff in these research projects. His scientific, educational, and international cooperation activities have significantly contributed to the advancement of Semmelweis University\u2019s education and research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Jobst-Hendrik Schultz<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He is a Senior Physician at the Clinic for General Internal Medicine, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine, Heidelberg University, is highly recognized for his outstanding contributions to medical education and patient-centered care. As an expert in psychosomatic medicine and simulation-based education, he has played a decisive role in modernizing the teaching methodologies at Semmelweis University. As a key advisor to the OSCE Steering Committee of Semmelweis University, he co-developed a joint course in German medical communication based on the renowned Heidelberg Standards. He has provided invaluable training for clinicians, educators, and simulated patients, thereby significantly enhancing the quality of communication-focused medical education. His work has strengthened international academic cooperation and inspired faculty and students through his exceptional professionalism and dedication to holistic medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Florian Steger<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He studied medicine in W\u00fcrzburg and Munich before earning his PhD in Bochum in 2002. In 2008, he obtained the venia legendi for History and Ethics of Medicine at the University of Erlangen-N\u00fcrnberg. Since 2016, he has been a full Professor at the Institute for History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine at the University of Ulm, and since 2017, he has also been an active member of the teaching faculty at the Asklepios Campus Hamburg of Semmelweis University. Throughout his career, he has received many awards, successfully applied for funding as principal investigator, and been invited to teach and study in many countries, from Hungary to China, Israel, and Poland, just to name a few. He is the author of more than 220 original scientific publications, and many of his 19 monographs have been translated into foreign languages, the latest being his work on Asklepios, which was translated into Hungarian in 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Muthiah Vaduganathan<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

He is a cardiologist and clinical trialist at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he co-directs the Center for Cardiometabolic Implementation Science. His work focuses on drug development, clinical trials, and cardio-kidney-metabolic therapies, particularly in heart failure. He has authored over 850 peer-reviewed publications and is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher. He also serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/em> and holds leadership roles in advanced-phase clinical trials, establishing him as a leading figure in cardiovascular medicine. His collaboration with Semmelweis University has evolved into a strong academic partnership. Semmelweis University served as a top enrolling center in several landmark trials led by Dr. Vaduganathan, including PARAGON-HF, PARADISE-MI, FINEARTS-HF, BALANCE-D HF, and EASi-HF. This partnership has strengthened international collaboration, supported young researchers, and contributed to advancing clinical research in cardiovascular medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Karen Vanhoorelbeke<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

She is an internationally acclaimed scientist at KU Leuven and Head of the PharmAbs Antibody Center, her pioneering research has transformed the understanding and treatment of rare hematological disorders, including thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and von Willebrand disease. Her groundbreaking identification of the open conformation of ADAMTS13 as a biomarker revolutionized TTP diagnostics, patient monitoring, and personalized medicine. She is an exceptional educator and mentor, who has had an enduring, fruitful collaboration with our Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology. She successfully led the EU Horizon 2020-supported TOLERATE consortium, a vital research and training network partnering six European universities, including Semmelweis University.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Sevil Yasar<\/a><\/p>\n
\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

She received her MD and PhD in pharmacology from Semmelweis University and completed her clinical and research training in internal medicine and geriatric medicine at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she is currently Professor of Medicine and Neurology. Her primary research focus is on identifying new pharmacological targets for the treatment and diagnosis of late-life dementias, including Alzheimer\u2019s disease and vascular dementia. She is recognized for her pioneering work evaluating the potential role of the brain renin-angiotensin system in Alzheimer\u2019s disease pathology. She is also involved in the care of people with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), and her research focuses on the role of comorbidities such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease or Parkinson\u2019s disease in the diagnosis and treatment of iNPH. She is involved in revising the international iNPH guidelines, which will be presented and published in 2026. She is the President-Elect of the International Hydrocephalus Society for 2025-2027. She serves on the editorial board of the journal Neurology<\/em>, and her research has been published in leading journals such as\u202fJAMA<\/em>,\u202fStroke<\/em>, and Neurology<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Alessandro Zorzi<\/a><\/p>\n

He works at the Department of Cardio-Thoracic-Vascular Sciences and Public Health at the University of Padua, and is Head of the Outpatient Cardiology Clinic at the ORAS Rehabilitation Hospital in Motta di Livenza. His scientific work focuses on cardiac arrhythmias associated with sudden cardiac death, as well as sports cardiology, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular screening in athletes. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards. His collaboration with the Department of Sports Medicine of Semmelweis University is particularly noteworthy, as it has fostered lasting scientific and educational ties between Italy and Hungary. Professor Zorzi has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as the British Journal of Sports Medicine<\/em>. His work has received more than 7,600 citations, with a Hirsch index of 45, he is recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary sports cardiology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Subsequently, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Igor Robert Blum was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa.<\/p>\n

He is a 1995 dentistry graduate and current Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry (FOK) at Semmelweis University has maintained an unbreakable professional and personal bond with the university<\/a> throughout his career. Professor Blum serves as Clinical Lead and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at King\u2019s College Hospital and Secretary of the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Primary Dental Journal<\/em> and serves on the editorial boards of multiple elite, top-tier scientific publications. He has been honored with several European and American fellowships, including formal induction as Fellow of the American College of Dentists in recognition of \u201cexcellence and significant contributions to dentistry\u201d. His profound academic impact is highlighted by 3,667 citations, an H-index of 29, and numerous prestigious accolades. These include the 2024 IADR Ivar Mj\u00f6r Award and the 2021 ADEE Excellence in Dental Education Award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Finally, following a proposal from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Hiroshi Mamitsuka was awarded the title of honorary professor.<\/p>\n

He is a Professor and Head of the Bioinformatics Center at Kyoto University, Japan, has made extraordinary contributions to bioinformatics, machine learning, and the scientific excellence of Semmelweis University. He pioneered early research in biologically motivated machine learning at the NEC Theory Laboratory, Real World Computing (RWC) program, before joining Kyoto University as a laboratory leader and becoming professor in 2005, focusing on theoretical machine learning development. His outstanding scientific achievements are reflected in a Hirsch index of 48 and more than 170 refereed publications, many of which have appeared in leading venues in artificial intelligence and bioinformatics, including AAAI (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence), as well as in distinctions and honors such as the DREAM9 Challenge Best Performer Award and the prestigious FiDiPro Professorship. He has helped initiate an ongoing collaboration between Semmelweis University and the Bioinformatics Center in 2018, advancing machine learning applications in disease genetics, transcriptomics, drug binding and interaction prediction, and contributing to three collaborative publications, including one in a leading journal in its respective field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The title of Professor Honoris Causa<\/h6>\n

Semmelweis University established the title of Professor Honoris Causa (Honorary Professor) in 2026. The Senate may award the title upon the rector\u2019s recommendation to Hungarian or non-Hungarian individuals who have made outstanding contributions to international education and scientific research.<\/p>\n

The distinction recognizes university faculty members and researchers who, through their international reputation, outstanding professional expertise, and decades of experience, contribute to the university\u2019s educational and research activities; have participated in undergraduate and doctoral education for at least twenty years and have conducted teaching and research activities as visiting professors on multiple occasions; possess extensive international ties and recognition, have facilitated internationally recognized achievements; and have enhanced the university\u2019s reputation through their innovative and inventive work. The award may also be given to internationally renowned individuals who have previously contributed significantly to Semmelweis University\u2019s training programs as visiting professors.<\/p>\n

The holder of the title of Professor Honoris Causa supports the work of the university\u2019s leadership by offering advice and opinion upon request; participates in the work of committees and the drafting of proposals; is involved in teaching and research, as well as in the training of the next generation of scientists; may offer courses or special lectures on specific topics to students; and assists in fostering and developing the university\u2019s international relations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\r\n [slb_exclude]\r\n
