Times Higher Education (THE) has released its World University Rankings (WUR) for 2026<\/a>. Semmelweis University holds its position from last year and remains in the top 300. By increasing its total score \u2013 based on the university’s calculation \u2013 it now ranks 272nd, achieving the best result among universities in Hungary as well as Central and Eastern Europe. The institution has made the greatest progress in its citation impact, demonstrating a further strengthening of excellence in terms of the scientific work carried out here.<\/div>\n

Semmelweis University has maintained its position from last year among the world’s top 251-300 universities, remaining the highest-ranked Hungarian university and retaining its leading position in the region.<\/p>\n

The UK-based Times Higher Education ranks the world\u2019s universities based on indicators in five areas: Teaching, Research Environment (research income and productivity), Research Quality (e.g. citation impact), Industry (industry income and patents), and International Outlook (e.g. number of international students, international co-authorship).<\/p>\n

Compared to last year’s results, Semmelweis was able to improve its total score on the five indicators. It performed best in the ‘Teaching’ indicator group, ranking 213th. The institution has shown the greatest improvement in Research Quality, which measures citation impact, moving up 73 places from 325th to 252nd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis achievement indicates that our scientific excellence has increased further compared to last year, as our publications are being cited more frequently worldwide and the results of our research are being referenced more often,\u201d said Rector Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely. He considers it a significant accomplishment that the university has retained its place among the world’s top 300 higher education institutions, while raising its overall score. According to the university’s calculations, it currently ranks 272nd, but the goal is to advance even further.<\/p>\n

Twelve Hungarian universities made it onto the list, which ranks nearly 2,200 universities in 115 countries. After Semmelweis University, \u00d3buda University achieved the second-best result, ranking between 601 and 800, followed by E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University and the University of Debrecen, which are ranked between 801 and 1000.<\/p>\n

Oxford University tops the global list, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Third place is shared by Princeton and Cambridge Universities<\/p>\n
