The 27th sculpture, erected at the initiative of the Semmelweis Memorial Committee, was inaugurated by the university&#8217;s leadership and the cultural and diplomatic corps of Hungary at the beginning of June.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44987\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr-400x275.jpg 400w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr-900x620.jpg 900w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr-175x120.jpg 175w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216570_057-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-758-scr-753x518.jpg 753w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1982 with the aim of honoring and promoting the work of the 19th-century Hungarian physician, the Semmelweis Memorial Committee has commemorated the spiritual heritage of Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis in 25 cities from Tokyo to Los Angeles and from Berlin to Canberra, <a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/2025\/03\/ignac-semmelweis-sculpture-inaugurated-in-thailand\/\">most recently in Thailand<\/a>. The current artwork is placed on a symbolic site, the former orphanage and children&#8217;s hospital complex of the Istituto degli Innocenti, founded in the 15th century as the &#8216;Hospital of the Innocents.&#8217; The sculpture was installed on the initiative of Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Rosivall, President of the committee, making it the second sculpture of the \u2018savior of mothers\u2019 in Italy, following <a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/2023\/07\/a-semmelweis-statue-was-inaugurated-in-perugia\/\">the first in Perugia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Present at the ceremony were Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector; Dr. \u00c9va Szab\u00f3 Feket\u00e9n\u00e9, Vice-Rector for Strategy and Development; Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Rosivall, Chairman of the Semmelweis Memorial Committee; \u00c1d\u00e1m Zolt\u00e1n Kov\u00e1cs, Ambassador of Hungary to Italy; Erika Emma Fodr\u00e9, Vice President of the Italian-Hungarian Association; Maria Grazia Giuffrida, President of the Istituto degli Innocenti; Dr. Krisztina Lantos, Director of the Collegium Hungaricum Rome; and sculptor Istv\u00e1n Madarassy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-44986\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr-753x502.jpg 753w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr-203x135.jpg 203w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2025\/06\/RS216571_060-idi-250604-semmelweis-ph-yuri-pozzi-798-scr.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe have gathered today in this unique city, which is proud of its rich historical and cultural heritage, to pay tribute to the doctor who has become the symbol of professional dedication and perseverance not only in Hungary but also in the whole world,\u201d said Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University, in his speech. As he recalled, Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis&#8217;s discovery that handwashing with chlorinated water could prevent childbed fever had been considered radical by his contemporaries and had met with resistance for a long time. \u201cHowever, his conscience and his commitment to science kept him going, and the future proved him right.
