With more evidence, this procedure may become part of targeted therapies in the future, but today physicians using routine tests and exams can identify and treat disorders more effectively and for a fraction of the costs, experts of Semmelweis University say.<\/div>\n<p>Despite gaining ever more ground, microbiome testing, a method that gives a detailed overview of the bacteria of the gut, is of limited value today for those seeking guidance on improving their gut health, Semmelweis University warns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p>Interest in microbiome tests has been propelled by a better understanding of how the gut affects overall health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gut microbiome abnormalities has been linked to several conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases, depression and even cancer, though causation is yet to be fully uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Microbiome testing is based on the analysis of the DNA in one\u2019s stool samples. \u201cThese tests give a snapshot of the actual state of the gut but the results are influenced by a host of factors from stress levels to the foods eaten to where and how (e.g. at home, at a clinic) the test was taken,\u201d says \u00c1rp\u00e1d Patai, associate professor at the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology, Semmelweis University.<\/p>\n<p>A common problem is that different test protocols produce different results.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p>Also, due to the variety of individual gut microbiome, no standard ranges of microbiome diversity have been set, which makes it difficult to interpret the readings even in comparison to one\u2019s own results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once the test is completed, testing companies send people personalized reports and suggest dietary adjustments. \u201cAnyone can benefit from switching to a healthier diet and taking supplements for a period of time. It will likely result a more diverse microbiome that is often shown people taking the test in the form of improved diversity index,\u201d Patai says. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But our knowing on how to use diet and nutritional supplements to adjust levels of bacteria is still limited, he adds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"w-100 keretes\">Diet has a major role in shaping the microbiome but its ability to alter its composition is limited. The microbiome, in large part, is set based on our genetics, type of birth (vaginal or Caeserian), geographical and cultural settings we were raised in. \u201cTraditional societies followed a high-fiber, low-fat diet, as a result, their gut contained bacteria that can easily digest fibers. We mostly lost this ability\/these bacteria due to unhealthy diets we have been following in the West. That partly explains why sudden and drastic switches to a plant-based, high-fiber diet might cause discomfort and transiently worsening symptoms for many\u201d, Patai says.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The main problem with microbiome diagnostics is that the analysis may be detailed, the proposed therapy is general as clinical decisions cannot yet be made based on the test,<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Patai says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence-based research today is scarce; much of the knowledge we have comes from experimental and animal studies whose results can\u2019t be extrapolated to humans,\u201d he adds.
