Scientific evidence suggests that acute heat restricts food intake, but the exact reasons for this had not previously been known. A research team led by the Medical University of Vienna was the first to identify the neuronal signaling mechanism that reduces calorie intake in heat. The Medical University of Vienna carried out the research in collaboration with a team led by Dr. Al\u00e1n Alp\u00e1r at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at Semmelweis University. Professor Dr. Al\u00e1n Alp\u00e1r&#8217;s research group has been supported by the National Brain Research Program for the tenth year in a row, in the framework of which the two groups have been cooperating successfully. The results act as a springboard for the development of new treatments for obesity and loss of appetite. These scientific findings were published on March 27, 2024 in the leading journal <em>Nature<\/em>.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-40870\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr-753x502.jpg 753w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2024\/04\/RS172886_GV5A7651-scr-203x135.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Studies in mouse models have shown that the signal transduction system originates in the parabrachial nucleus, the \u201cthermostat\u201d in the head, which is responsible for sensing temperature. \u201cWe observed the activation of specific cells in this area in the brains of mice exposed to temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius for an hour,\u201d reported Dr. Tibor Hark\u00e1ny. The cells extend into the hypothalamus, the brain&#8217;s center of visceral control, where the neurons for food intake are located. However, signals are not transmitted to these neurons directly, but through special cells called tanycytes that line the ventricles of the brain. The extensions of the tanycytes penetrate the brain tissue and eventually come into contact with the neurons stimulating food intake. \u201cThe signaling pathway we have discovered shows that heat alone does not affect satiety as previously thought. The release of a specific growth factor inhibits the activity of brain cells that stimulate food seeking and intake,\u201d explains Dr. Tibor Hark\u00e1ny.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr. Al\u00e1n Alp\u00e1r emphasizes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Information transfer in the brain is usually a very fast process. Our work successfully demonstrates that long-lasting, protracted signal transduction mechanisms involving non-classical cell types are also required for the responses that control the body&#8217;s equilibrium.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Keeping the core temperature between 36.5 and 37.4 degrees Celsius is essential for life. Our body therefore triggers various reactions when exposed to acute heat. \u201cReducing food or calorie intake is one such survival strategy at high ambient temperature. By discovering the underlying neuronal circuitry, we can advance basic research in this area,\u201d explains Dr. Tibor Hark\u00e1ny.
