On 22 May, the \u201eDanube is calling – Count Istv\u00e1n Sz\u00e9chenyi Ten-oared Amateur Regatta and Ten-oared Hungarian University and College National Championships (MEFOB) was held in the Buda branch of the Danube near Margaret Island. At the season-opening regatta, Semmelweis University’s team finished third in the women’s ten-oared regatta of universities, in a close battle.<\/div>\n

Named after the founder of rowing in Hungary, Count Istv\u00e1n Sz\u00e9chenyi, the race has traditionally been the opening regatta of the season since 1991. The main patron of the event is Gergely Kar\u00e1csony, the Mayor of Budapest. The patrons are the mayors of the districts concerned \u2013 namely the second and third \u2013 Gergely \u0150rsi and Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Kiss, also the president of the Sz\u00e9chenyi Society, Zolt\u00e1n Szemereki, Lajos Mocsai, the president of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (MEFS), and the head of the “cooperating higher education institution”, this year the rector of Semmelweis University, Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely.<\/p>\n

Organized by the Danubius National Boat Club (DNHE), the Hungarian Rowing Federation and MEFS, 11 university teams \u2013 including 4 women’s ten-oared rowing teams \u2013 competed in the 1000m race in sunny weather, although with strong winds.<\/p>\n

This year, Semmelweis University only fielded a team in women’s ten-oared rowing, who won the bronze medal in a close battle along with the winning team from the University of Physical Education and the team from the University of Pannonia who took the second place.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, within the women’s department, Semmelweis University\u2019s team was the only one built as a student-teacher “mix”. The team was further strengthened by Dr. Ibolya T\u00fari, Deputy Dean of Science at the Pet\u0151 Andr\u00e1s Faculty of Semmelweis, and the reigning Hungarian single-seater champion, Orsolya Benda, a recent graduate of physiotherapy at Semmelweis University\u2019s Faculty of Health Sciences. The team was completed by former national team members and rowers who took part in the challenge for the first time this year.<\/p>\n\r\n [slb_exclude]\r\n

The organizers also provided a helmsman and two experienced rowers for the duration of the race, as requested by the teams. Semmelweis University\u2019s boat was navigated by M\u00e1t\u00e9 Kiss (DNHE), the two experienced rowers were Krisztina M\u00e1th\u00e9 (DNHE) and M\u00e1rta Sarkadi (DNHE). Members of the women’s team expressed their gratitude to them and to Kornelia V\u00e1rszegi, Director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sport at Semmelweis University, for their support in the competition as well as in the preparation and registration.<\/p>\n
