Following the candle lighting ceremony, four Semmelweis University healthcare professionals received Pro Universitate Awards in recognition of their hard work and effort during the pandemic period.<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-28407\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/10\/RS141008_C19A4177-scr-267x400-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/>\u201e65 years ago, as tensions had been simmering for some time, Hungary started a revolution on 23 October 1956, that sought political reform and independence from the Soviet Union.\u201d \u2013 recalled dr. Ferenc B\u00e1nhidy (Vice-Rector for General Affairs) during the event remembering the Hungarian Revolution and Uprising in 1956. In his speech, dr. B\u00e1nhidy recalled on the historical events that led to the uprising and mentioned that participants and important figures of the revolution already knew that there was little if any chance of success, however this was the only way for Hungarians to revolt against the communist rule. Many people risked everything and sacrificed their lives for the enduring European spirit of freedom \u2013 added. The Budapest University of Medicine, the forerunner of Semmelweis University engaged actively in the events, the university staff and students were fighting to defend their liberty on the streets of Budapest and treated injured and wounded people behind the barricades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vice-rector dr. B\u00e1nhidy emphasized that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Semmelweis University was always able to progress during important turning points in Hungarian history. The courage and bravery of our university\u2019s heroes during the First and Second World War, the Spanish flu and the Revolution of 1956 will be remembered forever. Ferenc B\u00e1nhidy mentioned two names among the many anonymous heroes of the 1956 revolution events: his maternal uncle, Gy\u00f6rgy Vereckei, who was able to free the last Prince Primate of Hungary, J\u00f3zsef Mindszenty from prison. As the Hungarian State of Security wanted to arrest him, Gy\u00f6rgy had to flee to Austria and settled in Canada later. The vice-rector&#8217;s paternal uncle, dr. Attila B\u00e1nhidy was a student at the Faculty of Medicine in P\u00e9cs. Among with his university classmates he managed to bring fresh bread from the countryside to Budapest in a truck and distributed them on the streets of Budapest. He was expelled from the university, but the Budapest University of Medicine accepted him. He obtained his medical degree here later.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p>Studying history can help us to understand present-day issues and to create a better future \u2013 added dr. B\u00e1nhidy. He also added that currently the pandemic poses extraordinary challenges, however Semmelweis University proved its professional competency in overcoming the difficulties caused by the virus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28408 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/10\/RS141016_C19A4193-scr-400x267-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/10\/RS141016_C19A4193-scr-400x267-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/10\/RS141016_C19A4193-scr-400x267-1-203x135.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>After his speech dr. B\u00e1nhidy, chancellor dr. L\u00edvia Pavlik and all participants lit the candle and laid flowers in memory of the victims and heroes of the 1956 Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>After the commemoration event chancellor dr. L\u00edvia Pavlik presented four Pro Universitate Awards to \u00c1gnes Kormos (Directorate of Nursing Leadership and Health Care Professionals&#8217; Education), P\u00e9ter Kov\u00e1cs (V\u00e1rosmajor Clinical Centre), Hajnalka Oberfrank (Directorate of Nursing Leadership and Health Care Professionals&#8217; Education) and Zsolt \u00dcr\u00f6gi (Directorate of Services) in recognition of their efforts and hard work in the fight against the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"keretes\"><em>The\u00a0Hungarian Revolution of 1956\u00a0was a nationwide revolution against the Stalinist government of the\u00a0Hungarian People&#8217;s Republic and the Hungarian domestic policies imposed by the USSR.
