Four professors of Semmelweis University received state recognition in the Hungarian Parliament: Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Csan\u00e1dy and Dr. Gyula Po\u00f3r were awarded with the Sz\u00e9chenyi <\/span>Prize<\/span>, while Dr. Veronika \u00c1d\u00e1m received <\/span>the c<\/span>ivil division of the <\/span>Middle Cross<\/span> of the <\/span>Hungarian Order<\/span> of <\/span>Merit<\/span>. T<\/span>he official award ceremony <\/span>on the anniversary of the <\/span>Hungarian <\/span>Revolution <\/span>of<\/span> 1848 was postponed from <\/span>15 <\/span>March, <\/span>2021<\/span> to the national holiday of August 20 due to the coronavirus epidemic.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Sz\u00e9chenyi Prize was awarded by the President of Hungary to Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, cardiologist, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Rector of Semmelweis University, Head of the Department of Cardiology and the Department <\/span>of <\/span>Sport<\/span>s<\/span> Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, Director<\/span> of the <\/span>V\u00e1rosmajor <\/span>Heart and Vascular Cent<\/span>er<\/span> in recognition of his internationally recognized achievements in cardiology,<\/span> his dedicated work in education and his outstandingly successful institutional and professional public activities.<\/span><\/p>\n\r\n [slb_exclude]\r\n

Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Csan\u00e1dy, biologist and physician, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute<\/span> of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine of Semmelweis University, Head of the Department of Biochemistry received the Sz\u00e9chenyi Prize in recognition of his outstanding work as a researcher of the Momentum Program of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and his achievements in the study of ion channels in cells.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sz\u00e9chenyi Prize was awarded by the President of Hungary to Dr. Gyula Po\u00f3r, physician, recipient of the Batthy\u00e1ny-Strattmann L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Prize, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Chief Physician and Director General of the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy and the National Medical Rehabilitation Center, Professor of Semmelweis University in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in the research and treatment of osteoporosis and arthritis, as well as his outstanding role in the development of the National Osteoporosis Program.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Veronika \u00c1d\u00e1m, recipient of the Sz\u00e9chenyi Prize and of the Batthy\u00e1ny-Strattmann L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Prize, physician, biochemist, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, <\/span>P<\/span>rofessor <\/span>E<\/span>merita of Semmelweis University received<\/span> the c<\/span>ivil division of the <\/span>Middle Cross<\/span> of the <\/span>Hungarian Order<\/span> of <\/span>Merit <\/span>in recognition of her internationally recognized research work conducted <\/span>on<\/span> the oxidative damage of nerves as well as her outstanding scientific public activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time of <\/span>a<\/span> pandemic <\/span>period<\/span>, <\/span>cultural, scientific, artistic achievements <\/span>and the w<\/span>ork of <\/span>researchers showed that we <\/span>have<\/span> not los<\/span>t<\/span> the ability to shape the future\u201d, <\/span>Dr. J\u00e1nos \u00c1der, President of Hungary said during the awards ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the epidemiological situation, the Sz\u00e9chenyi Prizes and the Hungarian Order of Merit awarded on the anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 were handed over on 20 August.
