A blood donation week is held <\/span>for medical students <\/span>between <\/span>10-16 <\/span>May <\/span>organized <\/span>by Semmelweis University <\/span>Students\u2019 Union<\/span> and the <\/span>Hungarian<\/span> National Blood <\/span>Transfusion<\/span> Service in order to ensure a continuous blood supply even in the <\/span>current epidemiological situation. <\/span>As the opening of the <\/span>event<\/span>, the rector and leaders of the university, as well as the president and several students <\/span>of the Semmelweis University Students\u2019 Union<\/span> donated blood on <\/span>10 <\/span>May at the headquarters of the <\/span>Hungarian<\/span> National Blood <\/span>Transfusion<\/span> Service. <\/span>T<\/span>he goal <\/span>i<\/span>s to <\/span>have<\/span> at least <\/span>300<\/span> students <\/span>participating in the blood donation event<\/span> in the <\/span>up<\/span>coming days.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBlood donation organized for medical students has a history of several decades at the university: I myself donated blood as a <\/span>medical student\u201d, <\/span>recalled Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rector <\/span>emphasized<\/span> that a year ago, during the first wave of the coronavirus, Semmelweis University <\/span>also <\/span>set an example. Students helped to maintain a safe level of blood supplies, even if the number of blood donations decreased <\/span>as a result of the \u201cstay <\/span>at<\/span> home\u201d <\/span>campaign<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow, that we are over the most difficult part of the epidemic, and the third wave of the coronavirus is subsiding, planned surgeries, medical interventions may be realized and there is a greater need for blood donors. After COVID-19 infection, one should wait 3 weeks before donating blood, but following vaccination and after the occasional side-effects wear off, blood donation is possible even a day after\u201d, the rector pointed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"\"There have been fewer blood donors <\/span>in<\/span> the <\/span>current <\/span>epidemi<\/span>ological situation<\/span>, but now, as the health care system returns to its normal operation, the blood demand of hospitals is constantly increasing. Safe patient care requires 1400-1600 blood donors per day. <\/span>C<\/span>urrently 1300-1400 people arrive <\/span>on a daily basis<\/span>, <\/span>therefore<\/span> we <\/span>very much <\/span>welcome students\u201d, <\/span>said Dr. Zsuzsa Nemes-Nagy, Regional Director for Central Hungary of the <\/span>Hungarian<\/span> National Blood <\/span>Transfusion<\/span> Service. <\/span>The <\/span>Hungarian<\/span> National Blood <\/span>Transfusion<\/span> Service <\/span>would like to thank all Semmelweis students for blood donation with a commemorative card.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not the first time that Semmelweis University’s <\/span>Students\u2019 Union<\/span> has joined the call of the <\/span>Hungarian<\/span> National Blood <\/span>Transfusion<\/span> Service.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudent participation has a very important social message: in the current epidemiological situation, we have shown the power of joint action, with thousands of Semmelweis students taking part in volunteering. Now we would like to set an example again, since a blood donor can save the lives of 3 more people\u201d, said B\u00e1lint Tripolszky, President of Semmelweis University’s Students\u2019 Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He also added <\/span>that this year, they want to surpass last year\u2019s numbers in terms of participation and are confident that at least 300 people will take part in this year\u2019s campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the first day of the blood donation week, Dr. Andrea Matusovits Bayern\u00e9, Director General of the Hungarian National Blood Transfusion Service; Dr. B\u00e9la Merkely, Rector; Dr. Attila Szab\u00f3, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs; Dr. P\u00e9ter Hermann, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs; Dr. P\u00e9ter Varga, <\/span>Director of Healthcare Networking Management; Dr. P\u00e9ter Nyir\u00e1dy, Director of Vocational Training Institutions;<\/span> and B\u00e1lint Tripolszky, President of Semmelweis University Students\u2019 Union also donated blood.<\/span><\/p>\n\r\n [slb_exclude]\r\n
