160 students of Semmelweis <\/span>University <\/span>participated <\/span>in the Medical and Health Sciences Section of the National Scientific Student Conference (OTDK) held at the University of Szeged. O<\/span>ut of the participating Semmelweis students,<\/span> 32 won 1st prize, 42 won 2nd prize, and 22 won special prizes.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

This year, the National Scientific Student Conference (OTDK) was organized for the 35th time and its Medical and Health Sciences Section was hosted by the University of Szeged. During the event organized between 6-9 April, students representing 13 Hungarian and higher education institutions from the neighboring countries took part in the event with 20 project works in 77 sections. Semmelweis University was represented in the largest number by 173 presentations and was followed by the University of Debrecen with 114 presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"A<\/span>ccording to the <\/span>event r<\/span>e<\/span>port prepared by the<\/span> University of Szeged, <\/span>t<\/span>he most popular topics were physiology, pathophysiology, cardiovascular medicine and neuroscience. The international jury consisted of 236 members, including members from Romania, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, who evaluated the 10-minute presentations <\/span>held via<\/span> Zoom. 45 senior lecturers and researchers <\/span>of<\/span> Semmelweis University were among the jury.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey <\/span>do not <\/span>compete with each other but with themselves. Here they understand and learn what is <\/span>the <\/span>most important about spending a meaningful life: getting to know and using the creativity within ourselves. <\/span>It is often said that modern medicine is built on adherence to properly executed protocols. But the real challenge is to create new protocols involving modern knowledge. For those who <\/span>participate<\/span> in the <\/span>National Scientific Student Conference<\/span>, this opportunity opens up\u201d, <\/span>said Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Rov\u00f3, Rector of the University of Szeged.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. M\u00e1rta Sz\u00e9ll, Vice-Rector for Strategy <\/span>held a greeting speech. T<\/span>he participating students and their supervisors, as well as those interested <\/span>were also greeted by<\/span> D<\/span>r. Gy\u00f6rgy L\u00e1z\u00e1r, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Szeged, <\/span>D<\/span>r. Gy\u00f6rgy Kosztol\u00e1nyi, full member and <\/span>Vi<\/span>ce-<\/span>P<\/span>resident of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, <\/span>D<\/span>r. P\u00e9ter Szendr\u0151, President of the National Scientific Student Council, <\/span>Dr<\/span>. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 M\u00e1tyus, <\/span>C<\/span>hairman of the <\/span>P<\/span>rofessional <\/span>C<\/span>ommittee, and <\/span>D<\/span>r. Zolt\u00e1n Rakonczay, the <\/span>E<\/span>xecutive <\/span>C<\/span>hairman of the section.<\/span><\/p>\n

160 students of Semmelweis University <\/span>participated in<\/span> the competition, 95 of them earning <\/span>a<\/span> recognition. 31 <\/span>students <\/span>won 1st prize, 41 won 2nd prize, and 22 won a special prize. The new feature of this year’s <\/span>event<\/span> was that the winners of the section have been granted the right to participate in the 16-section competition <\/span>of presentations<\/span>, which is expected to take place in the first week of September <\/span>and will be held traditionally (in person).<\/span><\/p>\n

At the opening ceremony <\/span>held <\/span>on <\/span>6 <\/span>April, <\/span>D<\/span>r. Botond Roska, <\/span>D<\/span>irector of the Institute of Ophthalmology Basel (IOB), <\/span>a <\/span>world-renowned neurobiologist, visiting professor <\/span>of<\/span> Semmelweis University, <\/span>awardee<\/span> of the Semmelweis Budapest Award <\/span>held a presentation<\/span>. On the closing day of the event, as a joint program with the <\/span>Szeged Scientist <\/span>Academy, those interested could listen to the presentation of Sir Tim Hunt, a Nobel Prize-winning researcher.<\/span><\/p>\n
