{"id":25216,"date":"2021-03-29T10:28:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T08:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/?p=25216"},"modified":"2021-03-30T07:21:05","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T05:21:05","slug":"the-university-provides-counseling-service-to-those-involved-in-covid-care-with-new-services-and-growing-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/2021\/03\/the-university-provides-counseling-service-to-those-involved-in-covid-care-with-new-services-and-growing-capacity\/","title":{"rendered":"The university provides counseling service to those involved in COVID care with new services and growing capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Semmelweis University has increased the capacity of the individual psychological counseling service available to staff <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">members <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and students, and new online group events are also being launched. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">They are designed to help process the psychological burdens of emergency COVID care. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The university has also relaunched telephone counseling and crisis lines, and training materials are being <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">compiled<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> for students involved in volunteering to help them prepare for the most difficult situations.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-25214\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/03\/RS129604_C19A9095-scr-400x238-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"238\" \/>Semmelweis University is the largest <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">institution providing <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">COVID <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">care <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">in Hungary, and the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">physicians<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">health care personnel <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">working here have been at the forefront of the epidemic for more than a year now. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">C<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">urrently more than 800 patients <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">are being treated related to<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> coronavirus <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">at the departments<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, nearly 650 of whom are <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">COVID-positive. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">So far, more than 6,500 university students have taken part in epidemic control in addition to their studies, and now, during the third wave, more than 700 <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">of them <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">have applied to volunteer at university <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In view of the extraordinary epidemic situation and the increased number of cases, the university has further developed the network established for the psychological support of those involved in COVID care. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The capacities of the <a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/magtud\/en\/health\/student-counselling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Psychology Counseling Service<\/a> (Student Counseling) operated by the Institute of Behavioral Sciences were already increased during the second wave, adjusted to the needs, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/2021\/02\/the-employee-advisory-service-also-helps-with-stress-management-and-burnout-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Employee Psychology Counseling Service<\/a>, which has been operating since last December, is currently being expanded. In the group there is an opportunity to alleviate and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">get rid of<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> the psychological burdens arising during the care, to discuss issues related to difficult situations and difficult patients, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and participants are <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">provided with recommendations<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> on how to cope with <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">increased emotional burden. That is why they also anticipate that the demand will continue to grow as the epidemic subsides, therefore they plan to maintain a university counseling support network in the long run. The director of the institute also said that the current epidemic situation is a new situation for everyone, as there has been no such pandemic in Europe for 102 years. Students also have to contend with the rapid transition that exists between the \u201cuniversity desk\u201d and the challenging working environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">To support students involved in volunteering, the university also compiles an easy-to-read, quick-to-learn training material to help them deal with the most difficult situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25215\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/03\/RS116120_IMG_1475-scr-1-267x400-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/>According to the experience<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> of Dr. Gy\u00f6rgy Purebl, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">f<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">o<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> young people these include communicating bad news and treating patients who show aggression and anger. In connection with the latter, according to the expert, students should be made aware that anger and aggression are not directed against them, but this may be a psychological reaction to the difficult situation and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">fears in <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the case of some patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThere are proven communication and psychological solutions for every situation, and we present them in the materials&#8221;, said the director of the institute.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\">The director of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences also listed some easy-to-use methods that can help young people cope with the new situation:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\" type=\"square\">\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">In difficult situations, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">we should <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">always be aware of what <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">we <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">need at the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">particular <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">moment, what can help us personally (talk, family time or rather loneliness, collegial support, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">We are all different, we can bring the maximum of our abilities in different ways. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">We should not<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> compare ourselves to others, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">but we should <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">get the most out of our own abilities, find out what our strengths are (e.g. there are those who are stronger in supporting and helping patients in difficult situations, while others <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">do not become <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">tired <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">rapidly <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and work more easily for 12 hours, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and there are those <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">whose dexterity is very good, others have <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">good <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">communication skills)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p lang=\"en-US\">A healthy lifestyle is very important in enduring psychological burdens, exercise is one of the best stress relieving factors, which is why we should try to incorporate it in some tense situation, but if possible, not at the expense of sleep<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\">Dr. Gy\u00f6rgy Purebl emphasized that in spite of the extraordinary situation, he is experiencing outstanding coping skills in the case of both students and staff members.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en-US\" style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">It is certain that there will be a special generation of medical and healthcare workers who have socialized as students during a pandemic.
