With the establishment of the population-based Hungarian twin registry, it will be possible to explore new observations and connections in many fields of science, which can contribute to the preservation of health, the prevention of diseases and the development of more effective treatments. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">As part of <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the program, about 160,000 people will receive information about joining <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the twin register<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> in the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">forth<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">coming weeks.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-24577\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2021\/03\/RS91611_IMG_0913-scr-1-400x258-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"258\" \/><span lang=\"en-US\">With the development of a twin registry, researchers <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">may<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> also <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">meet<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> identical twins with different health conditions; one might suffering from a disease while the other might\u00a0 be healthy. Th<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">erefore<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, the examination of a given disease of identical twin<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> with almost identical genetic backgrounds may reveal what environmental factor could cause the difference. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">&#8220;Theoretically, both of them should suffer from the same disease due to their nearly identical genetic background. If this is not the case, it can only be due to environmental factors\u201d, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">said Dr. D\u00e1vid L\u00e1szl\u00f3 T\u00e1rnoki, Associate Professor, researcher at Semmelweis University, who together with his twin brother, \u00c1d\u00e1m, has been conducting research related to twins since 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Valid scientific results require studies involving a large number of twins, so they consider it important that all twins in the Hungary receive an information letter on joining the register. The letters are going to be sent out starting from 15 February, 2021 in cooperation with the Budapest Government Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">About 160,000 people across the country will receive the invitation in the forthcoming weeks. In case of those over the age of 18, each twin must register separately, while in case of those under the age of 18, one of the parents or guardians can do so on the <a href=\"http:\/\/ikrek.semmelweis.hu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/ikrek.semmelweis.hu<\/a> website. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Participation in twin <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">studies <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is always voluntary and free of charge, and data protection is ensured by strict data protection rules. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">In addition to participating in scientific research, the members can take part in special programs organized for twins, receive information <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">about<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> Hungarian and international news <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">i<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">n the topic <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">related to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">twins, and also have the opportunity for networking in forums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Twin research in Hungary started as early as the 1930s, then following the initiative of Dr. Endre Czeizel, geneticist, the Budapest Registry of twin births was introduced on 1 January, 1970.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fontos_div\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The initiative to establish the Hungarian Twin Registry started in 2007, when <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. \u00c1d\u00e1m Domonkos T\u00e1rnoki and <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r. D\u00e1vid L\u00e1szl\u00f3 T\u00e1rnoki visited <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">D<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">r.
