A 6-year-old boy has been released from Semmelweis University\u2019s 2nd<\/sup> Department of Pediatrics after recovering from Pediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS). He was the first patient in Hungary to receive targeted therapy for this rare and serious complication of COVID-19 infection.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"T<\/span>he affected <\/span>child <\/span>was first admitted to a hospital in Budapest <\/span>t<\/span>wo weeks ago, where he received <\/span>the recommended <\/span>steroid- and immunoglobulin therapy. <\/span>However, after temporary improvement, he had a fever again, his laboratory values deteriorated, so he was taken to the Pediatric Rheumatology Center of Semmelweis University.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of children with PIMS respond immediately to the primary, so-called standard treatment procedures, and their complaints disappear quickly, within a few days. However, there are therapy-resistant or severe cases with stormy symptoms when other treatments are also needed. In this case, biological therapy can bring healing.\u201d, highlighted Dr. Tam\u00e1s Constantin, Associate Professor at the 2<\/span>nd<\/span><\/sup> Department of Pediatrics of Semmelweis University.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Biological therapies, which are also increasingly used in pediatric rheumatology, are named after the biological technology used <\/span>during<\/span> their production. Their mechanism of action targets regulatory proteins involved in the development of the disease.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“If we think of steroid as a shotgun attacking the disease, then these modern drugs are telescopic rifles\u201d, Dr. Tam\u00e1s Constantin explained by way of illustration.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>egarding<\/span><\/span> applied <\/span><\/span>biological therapy, <\/span><\/span>the specialist said that<\/span><\/span> an active ingredient called anakinra was originally developed to treat adult rheumatoid arthritis, but it did not produce breakthrough results, <\/span><\/span>therefore<\/span><\/span> it was not included in the daily clinical practice of rheumatologists. <\/span><\/span>However, p<\/span><\/span>ediatric rheumatologists use it frequently because it is highly effective in certain diseases associated with extreme inflammatory conditions, including <\/span><\/span>P<\/span><\/span>I<\/span><\/span>MS<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Although the little boy was admitted to the clinic in a <\/span><\/span>bad health condition<\/span><\/span> with persistent fever, <\/span><\/span>the biological therapy started in time prevented not only organ damage, <\/span><\/span>but also the child\u2019<\/span><\/span>s <\/span><\/span>returning to the intensive care. After a few days of treatment, his laboratory values <\/span><\/span>al<\/span><\/span>so returned to normal, and he was able to leave the <\/span><\/span>department of <\/span><\/span>Semmelweis University without <\/span><\/span>any <\/span><\/span>symptoms or complaints.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
