Dedicated to the topic of solid organ transplantation, the 20th annual Semmelweis Symposium featured lectures from close to 30 distinguished doctors and researchers \u2013 over half of them from abroad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2363\" title=\"Semmelweis Symposium 2011\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/11\/semmelweissymposium-2_350px3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/11\/semmelweissymposium-2_350px3.jpg 350w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/11\/semmelweissymposium-2_350px3-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>\u201cScience doesn\u2019t know borders, science can only be international, which is why our symposium is an international one,\u201d Rector Tivadar Tulassay related at the opening ceremony. \u201cWe are very proud that, due to our international reputation, worldwide known experts and scientists have accepted our invitation and join us now to discuss this important topic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dr. R\u00f3bert Langer, vice-rector and director of the Department of Transplantation and Surgery spoke about the life and work of the University\u2019s namesake, Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis, using statistical data to illustrate how Dr. Semmelweis\u2019s discovery of the importance of proper handwashing techniques reduced the occurrence and death rate of puerperal fever in the 19th century.
