Fittingly, the commemorations commenced at Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis\u2019s birth house, now the Semmelweis Museum, Library and Archives of the History of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Among those in attendance were Dr. Andr\u00e1s J\u00e1vor, State Secretary at the Ministry of National Resources, Rector Tivadar Tulassay, and Rector Emeritus P\u00e9ter S\u00f3tonyi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2031\" title=\"Semmelweis Day Commemoration at the Semmelweis Museum\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/06\/Semmelweis-Day-2011_muzeum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/>In his ceremonial address, Dr. N\u00e1ndor \u00c1cs, assistant professor and vice-director of the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, pointed to the enduring importance of Semmelweis\u2019s life-long work, and the lessons this may hold for us in the current year, which has been declared \u201cthe Year of Research and Innovation\u201d at Semmelweis University. Referring to the University\u2019s &#8220;Research University&#8221; designation,\u00a0 he stated that \u201cthis title obliges us to treat research work as a priority at all University institutes and departments, no matter how narrow our framework or how great the strain of our daily problems may be, and to pass on the \u201ckey of science\u201d to anyone who comes forward with a new and innovative idea, so as not to repeat the error of Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis\u2019s contemporaries in their lack of understanding toward new discoveries and novel proposals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2034 alignright\" title=\"Commemoration by Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis's statue\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/06\/Semmelweis-Day-Inner-Clinical-Campus_250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"225\" \/>The commemoration continued at Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis\u2019s statue in the Inner Clinical Campus, where Dr. P\u00e9ter Nyir\u00e1dy, associate professor and vice-director of the Department of Urology spoke about Dr. Semmelweis\u2019s life work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Following the address, wreaths of remembrance were laid in front of the statue by Rector Tivadar Tulassay and Dr. P\u00e9ter Nyir\u00e1dy; Deputy Mayor Mrs. P\u00e9ter S\u00e1ntha; Dr. J\u00e1nos Gerle, Vice President of the Hungarian Medical Chamber; Dr. Emil Monos, President of the Association of Friends of Semmelweis University and Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Moln\u00e1r, Head Archivist. Representatives of the Students\u2019 Self Government and the Instructor Self-Active Group also paid their respects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The closing ceremony of the 241st academic year, held in NET Theoretical Building\u2019s ceremonial hall, marked the end of the celebrations. The event drew a large number of attendees, including Deputy Mayor Tam\u00e1s Szentes, Dr. B\u00e9la Szalma, director-general of the Association of Hungarian Medical Societies (MOTESZ), and Dr. J\u00e1nos Gerle. In his opening address, Rector Tivadar Tulassay emphasised that \u201ctoday, our world is characterised by renewal and competition, but a nation cannot be competitive, if it fails to consider the grooming of a new national elite and middle class to be of utmost importance\u201d. He also highlighted that some 2500 German students are interested in attending Semmelweis University, which is a university in itself. The ceremonial address was held by Dr. R\u00f3bert Langer, director of the Department of Transplantation and Surgery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2036\" title=\"Semmelweis Day Celebrations in the NET Theoretical Building's Ceremonial Hall\" src=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/06\/Semmnap2011_NET_1_350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/06\/Semmnap2011_NET_1_350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/semmelweis.hu\/english\/files\/2011\/06\/Semmnap2011_NET_1_350-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>The presentation of awards and distinctions constituted the final part of the ceremony. The first Semmelweis Media Award, established to recognise outstanding performance in health and science-related journalism and public awareness communications was presented to Ms. Adrienne Farkas, journalist for the Hungarian daily\u00a0<em>Magyar Nemzet<\/em>. Ms. Zs\u00f3fia T\u00f3th, reporter for the Hungarian Catholic Radio, received the special prize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Five outgoing University department directors \u2013 Dr. Kl\u00e1ra Gyires (Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy), Dr. P\u00e9ter Kupcsulik (1st Department of Surgery), Dr. Ildik\u00f3 Tarj\u00e1n (Department of Paedodontics and Orthodontics), Dr. J\u00f3zsef Tihanyi (Department of Biomechanics), and Dr. Antal Czinner (Department of Family Care Methodology) &#8211; received golden signet rings in appreciation for their work and dedication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The ceremony ended with the appointment of new university officials, the presentation of Professor Emerita and Emeritus titles, the Pro Universitate prize, and various ministerial awards, the appointment of associate professors, the presentation of \u201cexcellent worker\u201d distinctions, official rector\u2019s, dean\u2019s and director-general\u2019s praises, habilitation qualifications, and, finally, the presentation of foundation awards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">(Translated by Gina G\u00f6nczi)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Semmelweis University remembered its namesake, Ign\u00e1c Semmelweis, on the eve of the 193rd anniversary\u00a0of his birth.
